The original site of an 1823 colony was nicknamed “Lick Skillet.” Historians speculate it comes from a song, “The East Texas oxen team drivers sipped the spring sweet water and licked their skillets clean.” The colony was led by Humphrey Jackson, who later became an alcalde (mayor) of the settlement. The town was later renamed Crosby after a railroad construction engineer who organized rail tracks to be laid near the settlement.

On the outskirts of the town is Barrett Station, a historical landmark. After the Texan slaves were emancipated in 1865, Harrison Barrett, who was born into slavery, tracked down a majority of his family and relatives and relocated them to Crosby. The Barrett family then built a thriving community with dozens of homes, farms, a school, a church, and a cemetery. The original homestead is still being used by his descendants.

Crosby is within convenient driving distance of Houston, yet far away enough that it’s quiet and idyllic, making it an ideal location to search for the perfect RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

Out on the fringes of Houston, there are many wilderness parks to explore in a camper rental. Lake Houston, which is a large 12,000-acre lake, has a bounty of fishing and boating recreation. Anglers can expect to catch a wide array of fish, including catfish, largemouth bass, white crappie, and bluegill. There is a public boat launch and a fishing pier in the Alexander Deussen Park.

For more elbow room and outdoor fun, the Sam Houston National Forest has well over 120,000 acres of wilderness. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will appreciate this park. Between the gorgeous landscape and abundant wildlife, there are endless opportunities to make memories that will last a lifetime. Rare and endangered animals like the red-cockaded woodpecker make their home in this piece of wilderness. Well over 200 miles of multi-use trails are available for hiking, horseback riding, and biking. A portion of the park allows recreational off-roading, one of the very few in this part of Texas. Dozens of streams and lakes make for excellent fishing and water activities like kayaking and paddleboarding. Anglers must obtain a fishing license, though. There are a handful of campgrounds that are suitable for an RV rental, complete with hookups.

Xtreme Off-Road Park and Beach, just a few minutes away from Crosby, is rip-roaring fun. While motorhome rentals aren’t recommended for off-roading and mudding, there’s plenty of fun to be had. Fish, camp, hike, and swim. If the towing vehicle for the rental RV is a four-wheel drive, it certainly can be used.

RV Parks

When booking an RV in Crosby, be sure to figure out where to park overnight while you grab some Zs. There are several RV parks nearby. The Wildwood Lakes RV Park, which butts up against a small, private lake, offers a number of modern amenities like free, high-speed wifi, free fishing access, and showers. The friendly staff will help with unhooking, and leveling it, too.

Looking out on a scenic river, the San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort in Highlands may be a good option. They boast plenty of pull-thru sites, an adults-only infinity pool with a spa and waterfall, and a picturesque pier for fishing. A full-service RV park, several other amenities like WiFi and 24-hour laundry are included.

Exploring the City

Although a motorhome rental in Crosby makes it easy to get into Houston for fun and adventure, there’s plenty of things to do and see out in the eastern ranchlands. Texas is well known for its love of golf, and even out on the fringes, there are dozens of excellent courses. The Atascocita Golf Club in Atascocita is one of the oldest fairways in the area. The course was designed by Ralph Plummer, who also designed its better-known cousin, the champion Cypress Course in Houston. In addition to having the only par-3 championship course in Houston, the club also has a putting green and a driving range for practice purposes.

Step back into time! The San Jacinto Museum of History’s vast collections spans over 400 years, with over 100,000 artifacts and documents available to the public. The award-winning 35-minute multimedia production details the events of the infamous Battle of San Jacinto. The waterfront town of La Porte, which is where the museum is, has many historic homes and churches that makes strolling about quite enjoyable.

Get a break from the Texas heat! Pirates Bay in Baytown is a fabulous water amusement park with dozens of soaking water rides, including a sloshy wave pool, a pool in which guests can learn how to surf, and 300-feet twisty water slides.

Surprising very few, the subject of a “proper” barbeque is often fiercely debated. Which is better: wet or dry rubs? Which restaurant has The Best BBQ? Straight Off the Road in Crosby is a hole-in-the-wall type restaurant popular with the locals that dishes up delicious fare. Alternatively, try Goings BBQ and Steak Company which is a longtime Crosby staple. After a long day of adventuring in a Crosby RV rental, kick up your heels and watch the sun set behind the city skyline.
