The Great Outdoors

When you rent a motorhome in Dallas, the charm of this small town does not stop at its people and its city center but resonates too through the great outdoors that surround it.

Within the city itself, you will find Dallas City Park. If you visit during the hotter months, make sure you put aside a day to explore this 35-acre park. Within its walls, you will not only find ample green space, ideal for relaxing in the sun with a picnic but also swimming holes, Japanese gardens, and even an 18-hole golf course!

Just outside of town is the magnificent Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. If you are able, spend a full day here to explore the walking trails, get acquainted with the unique flora and fauna and, most of all, enjoy the serenity! The refuge measures an incredible 2500 acres. It is made up of a diverse array of habitats including wetlands and forests that allow animals such as the Canada goose and black-tailed deer to flourish here!

Within the refuge is Mount Baldy. Make sure to do the short loop trail up the 500-foot hill, which leads to a viewing platform at the top. Hikers will be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of the rolling countryside that surrounds them – a perfect spot for a sunset viewing! If you need somewhere to cool down after all of that strenuous climbing, head to the northern area of the park, where you will find Morgan Lake, a great place for a quick dip.

For the more luxurious options, you will need to head further out of Dallas, towards either Salem or Corvallis. Here you can opt for either the Premier RV Resort of Salem or Ash Creek Mobile and RV Park. Both provide similar offerings with well-maintained facilities and full hooks ups for your RV. Make sure to book in advance during peak months, as these are the most popular campgrounds in the area and spaces fill up fast!

If you opt for the more primitive campgrounds in the surrounding hills, you will be rewarded with incredible scenery and an air of peacefulness. If you find yourself needing a quick overnight stay, there is a Walmart in town and camping may be allowed at this location. Just head in and speak with management before you settle down for the evening.

Exploring the City

The sheer amount of history that has been preserved in Dallas is incredible. With many of the buildings having been built between 1880 and 1910, walking down the main street in this charming town will have you in awe. In particular, take note of the Polk County Courthouse. Built in 1900, it is one of the oldest functioning courthouses in the state with a prominent 95-foot clock tower watching over the town.

Once you have exhausted the streets and shops of Dallas, head into the countryside and treat yourself to a tour of Oregon wine country. There are many wineries located just minutes outside of town, with lots more found a 10 to 20-minute drive away. Acclaimed wineries include the Van Duzer Vineyards, for the panoramic valley views, and Illahe Vineyards for their traditional take on winemaking.

For your dose of culture, drive ten minutes eastwards to Independence, a tiny town, and home to the impressive Polk County Museum. Named as one of the best museums in Oregon, this museum houses a variety of exhibitions ranging from logging and military history to the county’s founding citizens. A fun and informative museum, suitable for the whole family!
