On the northern banks of the Columbia River lies the peaceful village of Dallesport, Washington. This area was once home to the Wishram tribe of indigenous people before they were moved to Yakima up north. Historically, Dallesport was referred to as Rockport or Rockport Flats and was one of the first major ferry crossings to forge the mighty Columbia River. Dallesport was even known at one point in time as the county seat for Klickitat County, before relinquishing this designation to the large city of Goldendale.

There are many reasons to book an RV in Dallesport, from the intricately woven tapestry of history, the friendly small-town vibes, or the incredible nature. Cities like Portland, Oregon and Seattle are easily reachable when you rent an RV in town, although the peaceful atmosphere might lure you into staying put and relaxing in the tranquil, riverfront paradise that is Dallesport.

Discover Dallesport

The Great Outdoors

Dallesport is tucked away in the scenic Columbia River Gorge, one of the most stunning natural areas in the entire Pacific Northwest. This crucial habitat is home to an assortment of recreation areas, state parks, and campgrounds, making it a popular outdoor destination as well as a fantastic place to rent an RV. The town of Dallesport is literally surrounded on all sides by nature in one form or another, like Columbia Hills Historical State Park, known for its waterfalls and glorious riverfront scenery. Guests to the park enjoy a variety of outdoor activities like swimming, rock climbing, hiking, windsurfing, boating, and fishing. Additionally, there are ancient petroglyphs inscribed on rock faces throughout the park, left behind by indigenous people before Europeans ever reached North America.

The Deschutes River State Recreation Area is located across the river in Oregon, with even more enchanting wilderness to encounter while you camp with your Dallesport camper rental. The recreation area encompasses the confluence of the Deschutes and Columbia Rivers and is an excellent place to go swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Doug’s Beach State Park and Mayer State Park are both found opposite one another on the Columbia River west of town, so there are even more places you can use for riverfront camping in your Dallesport RV rental. Doug’s Beach State Park was named for Doug Campbell, a windsurfer who helped popularize the adventure sport. The park is one of the best places in the country for windsurfing due to the intense wind speeds over the river.

If you don’t mind dipping back into Oregon, you can take your Dallesport motorhome rental to Mount Hood National Forest, one of the premier wilderness areas in the entire country. This sprawling forest takes its name from Mount Hood, the highest point in all of Oregon, and one of the most prominent stratovolcanoes around. There are an astonishing eight wilderness areas, and 170 designated recreation areas scattered throughout the forest, helping make it a highly visited outdoor paradise in the Pacific Northwest.

RV Parks

Visitors to the Columbia River Gorge area should find it quite easy to locate a safe and comfortable place to unwind in the comfort of their Dallesport camper rental. Columbia Hills RV Village is a peaceful little enclave close to the river. There are laundry facilities and restrooms on site, and gorgeous views.

Bridge RV Park & Campground is another place to post up for a night or two, with both RV sites and tent camping sites available. The park is an hour's drive from Portland, with restrooms, laundry facilities, TV, and Wi-Fi.

Peach Beach RV Park on the Columbia River is yet another option in the area. There are over 100 acres of scenic woods to explore, as well as pristine beaches and a sublime swimming lagoon separated from the river.

City Attractions

Dallesport is less like a city and more like a loose collection of homes and shops, so those looking for some city sightseeing are better off visiting places like The Dalles, which is located directly across the Columbia River. There you can see an eclectic array of attractions, like the Wonderworks Children’s Museum of the Gorge for instance. For those traveling with families and small children, this is a must-see stop where kids can fully appreciate and learn about the natural world and how everything works.

Fire Museum in City Hall pays homage to the brave firefighters who risked their lives to protect the town from tragedy. A dazzling collection of artifacts and antique fire engines make for some excellent photo opportunities. The museum is located in the city hall, a gorgeous and ornate building in its own right.

The Dalles Dam is an amazing feat of engineering that you can tour. You can even ride an open-air train on top of the dam to see the powerful churning rapids at the foot of the dam. The gorge is truly an amazing place to see, and the top of the dam is the perfect place to take photos.
