The tiny town of Dorris in northern California has fewer than a thousand people living in it, but don’t let that fool you; this splendid spot is practically on top of the shared border between Oregon and California and surrounded by some pretty unbelievable landscapes.

Dorris was first named in 1907 after the Dorris brothers, a couple of farmers from who raised livestock near the river where the town now sits. The town was named by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, whose railways brought prosperity and ease of access to the once remote area.

When you book an RV in Dorris, you are free to luxuriate in the mythical landscapes of both northern California, and southern Oregon, and every park, forest, mountain, and lake in between. You can take your Dorris motorhome rental to either Medford or Klamath Falls north of the border in Oregon if you feel like stopping in a larger or more entertaining city, but Dorris should be plenty of fun on its own.

Discover Dorris

The Great Outdoors

No other place in the contiguous United States excites outdoor enthusiasts and campers quite like the wilderness of northern California. This mesmerizing collection of coniferous forest, hulking mountains, and divine camping areas is a significant contributor to the local economy due to the number of tourists who visit each year. When you rent an RV in Dorris, you are in for a treat as there are almost endless places to explore. Lava Beds National Monument is close to town, with plenty of amazing sites to knock your socks off while you hike through its forests and over its ancient volcanic rock formations. There are lava tubes you can walk through, caves to explore, mountains to climb, deserts to see, and archaeological sites dating back to the Modoc War to uncover at this diverse destination.

Just over the border in Oregon is the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, a similar area sharing a lot of similarities with Lava Beds National Monument. There are some rare endemic wildlife species calling the park home, as well as dazzling high mountain vistas where you can see Crater Lake National Park on a clear day. Speaking of Crater Lake, it would be wise to head to this breathtaking natural landmark while on vacation with a Dorris motorhome rental. Crater Lake is one of the deepest, coldest, and clearest lakes in the world, situated inside a volcanic crater in the now extinct Mount Mazama. This ancient mountain and its lake are tremendously popular for photographers, hikers, bikers, swimmers, and those camping out when they rent an RV and need a spot to stay overnight.

If you haven’t had enough of the region’s volcanic activity, head down to Lassen Volcanic National Park west of Redding back in California for some special sightseeing. The park is one of the only spots in the world where you can see all four of the major types of volcanoes, from the cinder cone to the stratovolcano. You can wander through the enchanting forests, march up to Lassen Peak, or simply camp out in your Dorris RV rental when you drop by for a visit to one of the state’s lesser-known national parks.

RV Park

There aren’t too many RV parks to choose from when you rent an RV in Dorris, but with a little bit of driving you are sure to find a few suitable places to post up for the night. Butte Valley RV Park is located in town, within walking distance of all the shops and restaurants in the downtown area. There are laundry facilities, restrooms, hot showers, and cozy cabins available on-site.

You might want to check out Klamath Ranch Resort/Blue Heron RV Park, a wonderful and inviting campground near town. There are secluded camping spots by the water and a fly-fishing lake where you can learn how to fish. There is a bar and restaurant for guests too.

If you like public campgrounds, there are several to the south belonging to the national forests. Shafter Campground and Juanita Lake Campground are rustic campgrounds where you can reconnect with nature while enjoying magnificent views by the water.

City Attractions

Dorris doesn't have a lot of attractions or points of interest, so you might have to head to a larger city nearby to get a better picture of what cities are like in the region. Klamath Falls is over the border in Oregon, but a fabulous place to spend a few days with your Dorris motorhome rental.

There are a few excellent museums to check out while in Klamath Falls, in addition to several awesome restaurants, bars, breweries, art galleries, and boutique shops. The Klamath County Museum is your go-to resource for all things pertaining to the complex history of Klamath County. A wide variety of subject matter is covered in the museum, from the local native population to the settlers who came more recently to make a new life for themselves. Natural history is a major focus too, with lots of minerals and gems on display in addition to historical artifacts.

The Baldwin Hotel Museum preserves the memory of the Baldwin Hotel, opened in 1906. This amazing hotel is preserved with near-total accuracy, adequately demonstrating what it was like when it first opened. You can learn a great deal about history in this fine establishment too, with even more artifacts and local treasures to be seen.

The Favell Museum of Native American Artifacts and Contemporary Art houses a staggering collection of over 100,000 native artifacts from indigenous tribes all over North and South America. Some of these fascinating objects date back over 12,000 years, well before recorded history. There are stone pots, elegant beadwork tapestries, tribal ceremonial outfits, weapons, and tools for all to see, and you won’t regret taking the time to do so.
