When you book an RV in Clearfield County, you will have access to some of Pennsylvania’s best-kept secrets. DuBois is the largest town in the county and the best option when looking for somewhere to base yourself. Located on the confluence of two major highways, Interstate 80 and Route 219, DuBois is a convenient stop for anyone coming from both Cleveland, OH, and New York, NY.

The town was named after local lumber entrepreneur John DuBois, who settled in the area during the late 1800’s. After the lumber industry boom, coal mining quickly became the dominant industry here, the scars of which can still be seen in the town’s surrounding landscape. Now, DuBois is a gateway town for visitors to explore the variety of huge parks nearby. In fact, there are over 100,000 acres of forest and 16,000 miles of streams to discover and explore within driving distance of town.

Serving as a popular travelers base, DuBois maintains the perfect balance of convenience and natural beauty, ideal for those who have the desire to rent an RV.

The Great Outdoors

Whether you prefer a relaxing stroll through a local park or have a burning desire to delve into the unknown, you will find something for you when you opt for a camper rental near DuBois.

Idyllically located just to the north of DuBois and sandwiched between Moshannon State Forest and Allegheny National Forest, you will find a collection of beautiful lakes. Treasure Lake is the largest of the group. Although it is a semi-private residential community, members of the public are allowed access to the lake during the day. The two lakes are excellent for a day out on the boat, and a spot of fishing, whilst the lakeside beaches provide a great place for some rest and relaxation! Lake Sabula is Treasure Lake’s slightly smaller, but by no means inferior, neighbor. If you prefer to get off the beaten track and away from the crowds, this is the option for you.

For a glimpse into the stunning Pennsylvanian parks, you have two fantastic options to explore in your DuBois motorhome rental. The first, Moshannon State Forest, is just a fifteen-minute drive from town, making this a great choice for a day trip. This park provides visitors with some of the most majestic hikes in PA, with hundreds of miles of well-maintained trails that cater to a variety of abilities! It’s even possible to spot the elusive Elk in these spectacular mountainous forests. Head to the Quehanna Wild Area for the best chance of seeing them!

If you would rather spend a few nights camping under a canopy of trees, head to Allegheny National Forest. Around an hours drive from DuBois, you will need plenty of time to explore the nearly 500,000 acres of forest and over 24 miles of rivers and reservoirs that can be found here. Whilst exploring, keep a lookout for some of the historical buildings that have been untouched since the early 20th century. As Pennsylvania’s only national park, this is a must-see. Point your RV rental in this direction and have a great family outing.

RV Parks

When you rent a motorhome in DuBois, you will find the majority of campgrounds scattered along Interstate 80, with easy access to both forests!

Placed near the shorelines of Treasure Lake is a beautiful maintained KOA. As you would expect, facilities here are extensive, with all sites having full hookups, modern washroom facilities, a huge communal pool and an abundance of sporting facilities. An added bonus is that all campers receive community access to a scenic golf course and two lakeside beaches! Try Clearfield Camp if you prefer smaller, family-run campground with a more intimate atmosphere. The campground offers full washroom facilities, and all be it with a more primitive feel, as well as electric hookups for your RV. It is worth spending one night here, just to take in the incredible sunset views you get from the top of the hill!

Within the national park, there are also several campgrounds to choose from. These tend to be smaller, with limited or even no facilities, so choose wisely! Whispering Winds Campground or the Red Bridge Campground offer travelers great spots to set up camp for the night, right in the heart of the forest!

Exploring the City

Although this part of Pennsylvania is known for its spectacular national parks and great outdoor activities, there is still plenty to keep visitors occupied in the center of DuBois.

Take a stroll through downtown, with its diverse mix of shops, restaurants, and cafes, stopping to marvel at the historical buildings that date back to the early 1800’s. A quick stop at Doolittle Station will leave you better informed about the history of the railroad, while lunch in the converted passenger carriage next door will transport you back to a 1950’s diner.

The DuBois Area Historical Society is the most comprehensive museum in town. Consisting of three different buildings, the exhibitions cover a wide range of interesting topics such as sports and railroad displays, a Veterans museum and an extensive display of Jackson China. The Museum is only open during the months of April through to November; so do take note of this before visiting!

Clearfield County has an exciting and newly emerging scene of wineries and breweries to visit, so make sure to check them out while you are in the area. All establishments are locally owned and, between them, they produce over 120 different types of wines and 30 different types of beer.

If it’s a glimpse of the picturesque Pennsylvanian forests you are seeking, consider a travel trailer rental in DuBois! Enjoy the locally produced wines, experience a spectacular sunset from the top of the forested hills, and appreciate the scenery. Rent a luxury motorhome rental in Dubois, PA, and see what all the area has to offer.
