Twenty-five miles southeast of downtown Washington D.C. is the tiny village of Dunkirk, Maryland. Dunkirk serves as a popular destination for travelers, particularly for people opting to rent an RV and explore the Chesapeake Bay area around the nation’s capital. This suburban community is known for its wealthy inhabitants, many of which work in the capital as politicians, lawyers, lobbyist, or other high-end careers. Despite once being a tobacco-laden agricultural community, Dunkirk is now a tranquil town besides the Patuxent River, which flows into the nearby Chesapeake Bay.

People who decide to book an RV in Dunkirk usually do so for the inherent possibilities that lie beyond the village borders. Stunning wetlands and pristine coastline are two of the reasons why vacationers flock to Dunkirk each summer. Amazing seafood and easy access to Baltimore, Richmond, and Washington D.C., make renting a Dunkirk camper rental a unique way to explore several of the surrounding states.

Discover Dunkirk

Explore the Outdoors

There are only a few parks located inside Dunkirk, but what it lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for in quality. Dunkirk District Park has many shaded areas for relaxing picnics or cookouts, in addition to a state-of-the-art skatepark, multi-use sports fields, concession stands, jogging trails and other helpful park facilities. Hall Creek Natural Resource Management Area and Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary are also located in Dunkirk, giving visitors the chance to see local wildlife in their natural habitats. In fact, the whole Patuxent River is lined with amazing preserves, protected wetlands, and recreation areas for you to enjoy in your Dunkirk RV rental. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Patuxent River Park, Patuxent River Park South, and Kings Landing Park are all within a 30-minute drive to Dunkirk.

St. Mary’s State Park and the adjoining St. Mary’s River State Park are about an hour’s drive south near the Potomac River. Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting are a few of the things you can do when you bring your Dunkirk rental RV to these south Maryland nature areas.

At the southernmost tip of Maryland near the confluence of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay, Point Lookout State Park is a popular tourist destination too. This strategically important location was frequently battled over by both sides during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, where it was used as a prisoner camp. The glorious old lighthouse is worth checking out as it was built in 1830. Additionally, the alluring beaches and the ghost sightings make Point Lookout an intriguing place to stop during your adventure.

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, on the other side of the bay, is another place to see if you don't mind driving through Annapolis and over the bay bridge with the Dunkirk motorhome rental. Numerous types of ecosystem clash and coexist in this beautiful conservation area, where you can see hundreds of different types of animals; it’s a wildlife photographer’s dream setting.

Next door to Blackwater is the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park which pays homage to the legendary woman and abolitionist who helped free countless slaves. Despite the risk to her own life and well-being, she returned to the south to lead escaped slaves to the north time and time again.

Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia, is the only national park within short driving distance. The near-mythical Skyline Drive that runs through the park along the spine of several mountains is frequently hailed one of the most spectacular drives in the world, so don’t skip out on this treasure when you rent an RV in Dunkirk.

City Sightseeing

Unfortunately, Dunkirk is not known for its attractions, as it is more of an outdoors destination and gateway to the lovely shores of coastal Maryland. Calvert County, however, has a few fun stops worth mentioning. The Drum Point Lighthouse is a unique building in the harbor of Solomons that is worth a visit, especially when you realize that the amazing Calvert Marine Museum is right next door. The museum has fun family activities, gigantic shark skeletons on display, and fossils dating back to twenty million years ago, found locally along the Chesapeake Bay.

The Patuxent Wine Trail consists of quite a few vineyards in southern Maryland, where tasting is encouraged and tours are welcomed.  Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum is a delightful combination that educates both adults and children about the natural history of the area. Archeological sites dating back some 9,000 years can be found in the park next to the museum. Lastly, Chesapeake Beach Water Park is an ideal place for families to spend the day, with fun water slides and splash pools, and a lazy river for refreshing and relaxing.

RV Parks to Visit

The village of Dunkirk is surrounded by forest land and open space, as is much of Calvert County, so camping spots are easy to come by.
