The city of Durand is in western Wisconsin, situated along the banks of the Chippewa River. Although Durand is in Wisconsin, it is much closer to Minneapolis in Minnesota than it is to either Madison or Milwaukee.

Durand wasn’t always known by that name, as it was once called Bear Creek when it was still a potential settlement on government land. When Miles Durand Prindle made his way upstream to claim some of the government land in 1856, the town was officially settled, with the name changed in honor of its founder.

Since 1887, the city of Durand has been a beautiful place to live or visit. If you like charming, convenient, welcoming localities surrounded by lush Midwestern landscapes, you should book an RV in Durand and start planning your next vacation.

The Great Outdoors

Wisconsin ranks highly among the best places to take an outdoor-centric vacation due to its rich wilderness areas, forests, and spectacular lake shores. The Chippewa River flows through many of the state’s best natural areas and conservation lands. Nine Mile Island State Natural Area, Dunnsville State Wildlife Area, and Dunnsville Barrens State Natural Area account for a few of these excellent nature parks, where incredible wildlife and natural habitats are on display. Five-Mile Bluff Prairie State Natural Area is one of the largest natural areas close to Durand and a wonderful place to head when you rent an RV. There are stunning bluffs overlooking the river that tower over 300 feet high, with spectacular vantage points of the valley below.

Lake Wissota State Park can be found by taking your Durand motorhome rental north to the other side of nearby Eau Claire, for an enjoyable camping experience near one of the state’s countless lakes. Lake Wissota is a human-made lake on the Chippewa River, with ample space to go fishing, camping, and swimming. The park is also known for its unbelievable geological history beneath the surface, with two-billion-year-old granite and Cambrian sandstone, heavily marked by the receding glaciers of the last ice age. There is a nature center, a family-friendly campground where you can stay with your Durand campervan rental, a series of nature trails, and some of the region’s finest beaches.

Frontenac State Park is just over the border on the Minnesota side of the Mississippi River, noteworthy for its incredible old forts, cabins, and remnants of the ancient Hopewell culture which lived in the area for nearly 2,000 years. The park isn’t just a historical site, however; there are magnificent bluffs overlooking Lake Pepin, along with swimming beaches and campgrounds.

City Attractions

Two major routes intersect in the town of Durand, making it easy to get in and out of town when rent an RV here. When it comes to city sights, you won't find bright lights or many attractions, but that isn’t to say that Durand doesn’t have some interesting spots to explore. Aside from some old buildings erected when Durand was just a settlement, Durand is mostly a sleepy town with splendid views of the Chippewa River. It is also the designated county seat for Pepin County, so some of the area’s administrative governmental buildings can be found within.

The Old Courthouse Museum celebrates the old county courthouse which was actively used for over 100 years until 1985 when all vital functions were moved to the new facility. The building is one of a few Greek Revival style wood buildings left standing in the state, and inside, you can find even more information and treasures. The exhibits in the museum cover a variety of topics, from famed educator Helen Parkhurst to the infamous outlaws, the Maxwell Brothers.

Over in Eau Claire, which is not too far away, you can visit a series of other impressive museums, like the Children's Museum of Eau Claire or the Chippewa Valley Museum. The children’s museum is a wonderful place to bring your kids, to entertain and inform them about the natural world while they spend their visit exploring and learning. The Chippewa Valley Museum is housed in an old schoolhouse built in the 19th century, with award-winning exhibits and a never-ending stream of fascinating information.
