Elkton sits on the shore of the Elk River, just off the Chesapeake Bay and about halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. If the town’s name sounds familiar, it’s perhaps because it once had some of the least restrictive marriage laws in the country, making it a very popular destination for elopements, particularly for celebrities. While Las Vegas is the undisputed king of elopements today, the tradition carries on here in Elkton and many residents from northeastern cities choose to get married here when they don’t desire a ceremony.

Getting around with an RV rental near Elkton is easy as it’s just a short distance from Interstate 95, which connects many of the largest cities along the eastern seaboard. When you're planning your fuel stops, you may want to top up anytime you're near the highway as it can be difficult to maneuver a big rig in some of the smaller fuel bays around Elkton proper. If you book an RV in Elkton and wish to travel to one of the large metropolitan areas nearby, it’s a good idea to use public transportation to get there. The traffic in these dense east coast cities can be a bit of a challenge at times.

Discover Elkton

The Great Outdoors

Despite its proximity to a couple of large cities, Elkton has retained a very rural character that makes it popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Just outside of town, you’ll find multiple golf courses, horseback riding ranches, and boat rental shops that can get you out on the Chesapeake Bay.

If you were looking for a quiet place to lay down a picnic blanket, you’d be hard pressed to find a better location than Cow Pond just off of Main Street. A few squirrels or the errant goose might pop in on your lunch, but you’ll probably never find a crowd at this beautiful downtown park when you get a camper rental in Elkton. There’s also Elk Neck State Park on the nearby Turkey Point Peninsula, which is a perennial favorite with residents and for those visiting the area. A couple miles of dirt trail loop around towards the end of the peninsula before making their way to the 35-foot-tall lighthouse that overlooks the bay.

If you’re something of an adrenaline junkie, pop over to the town of Bear in Delaware and swing through the trees at the nearby adventure course. Parts of it will be familiar to anyone that’s done some zip lining, but much of it is more of a free form obstacle course. It’s great for kids and adults of all ages, making this an excellent family activity.

RV Parks near Elkton

The town’s location at the end of the Chesapeake Bay makes it a popular vacation spot so you won’t have too much trouble finding a place to camp with your RV rental near Elkton. One of the closest RV parks is Woodlands Camping Resort, which is just outside of town. The park boasts a swimming pool, basketball court, showers, a playground, and, of course, full hookups for your Elkton motorhome rental.

For a rustic camping experience, take a look at Holloway Beach. Sites have electrical hookups for the Elkton camper rental, but that’s about it. The lack of amenities is offset but the natural beauty of the sandy beaches in front of the sites though. Elk Neck State Park also has quite a few sites with electrical and sewer hookups if you don’t mind staying out on the windswept peninsula.

If nothing else, you can probably camp in the Elkton Walmart parking lot for a few nights with manager permission. Just be sure to top up your tanks, as you’ll need to be completely self-sufficient here.

Exploring the Town of Elkton

Elkton exudes small-town charm, with a fascinating and historic downtown area populated with all sorts of little curio shops, art galleries, and scrumptious restaurants to explore. There’s even a covered bridge just a couple of miles off Interstate 95 - the perfect location for a photo op.

You can also brush up on your Elkton history by visiting the Cecil County Historical Society, a small museum devoted to the many happenings in this little town over the past couple of centuries. The C & D Canal Museum is another must-see spot when you’re in the area as it highlights the importance and difficulty of constructing the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal to connect Washington DC and Baltimore with Philadelphia in the early 1800s. While the museum isn’t particularly large, it is comprehensive, with a lot of information packed into a small area.

There’s also the Iron Hill Science Center in nearby Newark, which is operated by the Delaware Academy of Sciences. The mostly outdoor installation is aimed at educating children about ecology and archaeology in this corner of Delaware and Maryland.

For some tasty eats, you’ll also want to check out the local farm market, which has loads of locally grown produce, delicious sweets, and comfortable outdoor chairs where you can relax and enjoy your purchases.
