Emporia is a city in Lyon County, Kansas. It is near the crossroads of U.S. Route 50, Interstate 35, and Interstate 335, making it a convenient place to rent an RV. The city was established in 1857 and named after an important commercial center in ancient Carthage. Emporia received its first railroad in 1869 and a second railroad arrived the following year; this led to the city becoming a booming railroad hub. Emporia was the first city in the nation to observe Veterans Day (in 1953); shortly after a resolution was passed to rename Armistice Day as Veterans Day nationally.

Book an RV in Lyon County, and you will be one step closer to a vacation most people can only dream about. While you are here, check out some other nearby communities. Topeka has had three U.S. Navy vessels named after it. El Dorado was the site of the first oilfield discovered with geologic mapping in 1915. McPherson was one of many stops along the National Old Trails Road (or Ocean-to-Ocean Highway) built in 1912. Junction City was originally to be named Manhattan, but low river tides forced immigrants to disembark 20 miles to the east; that site became Manhattan, and the original site became Junction City in 1857. Your Emporia travel trailer rental is how you will begin this epic vacation; where it takes you from there is up to you.

The Great Outdoors

Eisenhower State Park is a cultivated recreational area near Melvern Lake, with a trail system guests can hike or mountain bike; a separate trail is available for horseback riding. The general store collects camping fees, rents canoes and kayaks, and sells ice, firewood, and other necessities. Head here with the Emporia campervan rental, and you can enjoy fishing ponds, a beach for swimming, basketball and volleyball courts, and other amenities. Guests can practice archery or watch for resident wildlife such as white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, and waterfowl.

Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge was a flood control reservoir managed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers; refuge status was added to provide a habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl. Today it is a diverse habitat with wetlands and grasslands, bottomland hardwood forests, and riparian areas. Some areas are used for agricultural purposes, and the refuge is a haven for a variety of mammals, birds, and reptiles. The refuge plays an important part in environmental education with both self-guided and staff-led walks and various media information resources. Guests can engage in photography and wildlife viewing; hiking and an auto-loop tour of the park are available, and fishing and hunting are allowed.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a refuge for the plant species that once dominated this region but is now almost extinct. This type of ecosystem is more than just tall grass; it includes hundreds of plant species and more than 100 bird, reptile, and amphibian species. There are several hiking trails for guests to enjoy; most of the flowers and plants are too small to be seen from a car although guests can still enjoy an auto tour of the park. The preserve also provides social events and activities for young children.

Exploring The City

Emporia has a historic downtown area, which is a good place to begin your exploration of this city. Visitors can window shop or wander inside to see what is on hand while strolling from store to store admiring the classic architecture of the buildings and streets. There are several stand-alone buildings of historical value, one of which is a family home; this particular family was important in Emporia's history, and the family father was an advisor to several U.S. presidents. Some of them even visited the family home; visitors can take a guided tour of the house. There are several antique stores and a winery-gourmet shop that sells hand-crafted wines and ciders, winemaking accessories, kitchen supplies, locally made food items, and more.

It is locally owned and operated, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and has an extensive menu with some very creative listings. Have your meal wrapped up when you can't finish it and head back to your Emporia luxury RV rental to chow down later. Nothing says vacation like eating under the stars.
