The small port city of Escanaba, Michigan can be found on the Upper Peninsula, which connects with the Lower Peninsula by way of the Mackinac Bridge. Escanaba is about as far as you could possibly get from Detroit despite being in the same state, so it has a very different feel than the rest of Michigan. The city's name comes from the name of a smaller native village inhabited by the Ojibwa tribe in the same area, thought to mean “land of the red buck” by language experts. In 1863, the port city was founded, soon becoming a major transportation hub for timber and minerals headed east to supply the military during the Civil War.

These days, Escanaba still maintains its shipping activities but relies more on tourism and other industries to keep it prospering. When you search for an RV in Escanaba, you will be blown away by its shopping and dining areas, stunning coastal views, inviting atmosphere, and a diverse mix of cultures. Old lighthouses, historic hotels, fancy yacht clubs, and lovely beaches ensure that there is never a dull moment while you rent an RV in Escanaba, MI.

Discover Escanaba

The Great Outdoors

If you rent an RV in the hopes that you might see exceptional forest parks and divine stretches of lakefront on Lake Michigan, then Escanaba is truly an impeccable choice. Ludington Park in the middle of Escanaba is perhaps one of the city's best features, occupying space right on the lake. There are fitness circuits and machines on-site for exercise, walking and biking paths, a boat launch, fishing piers, playgrounds, tennis and volleyball courts, and a bandshell hosting concerts and festivals in the summertime.

Escanaba River State Forest is a lush forest awaiting you and your Escanaba camper rental to the south. This once clear-cut land was devastated by timber harvesters, but after failing to pay taxes on the land, the forest was reverted to state control. Now it has been reborn as a recreation spot where guests can hike, swim, fish, canoe, or hunt. A few miles northeast of Escanaba is the massive Hiawatha National Forest, named for the great Mohawk chieftain who assembled and organized the five nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. There are two separate portions of forest that make up the entire area, with nearly 900,000 acres of land to its name. There are over 100 glorious miles of lakeshore in the forest that are an absolute pleasure to explore, and dozens of campgrounds you can make use of with your Escanaba motorhome rental. Long-distance hikers can enjoy the epic, 4,600-mile North Country Trail passing through the forest too, making for some excellent hiking.

Far to the north on a remote island in Lake Superior, lies the sole national park in all of Michigan. Isle Royale National Park is one of the most remote parts of the entire country, with over a half-million acres of pristine land untouched by human development. Only around 25,000 people visit this national park each year, as it can be tricky to reach. You won’t be able to bring your Escanaba RV rental to the island, but you can park it and take a boat to explore the far-out island and all of its mysterious beauty.

RV Parks

Due to its proximity to the Hiawatha National Forest, Escanaba is a great place to rent an RV, with lots of RV parks and resorts in the vicinity. Vagabond Resort and Campground has cabin rentals, large RV lots, a playground for kids, a game room, and lots of space for hunting and fishing.

Whispering Valley RV Park accepts short-term or long-term stays, with rental cabin options too. On-site amenities include wireless internet, satellite TV, hot showers, restrooms, and a spot to do laundry too.

Ray’s Resort is in the national forest, right on the Whitefish River where you can go canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. There are two rental cottages, and lots of open space to camp and hike while you take a break from the great fishing.

City Attractions

It would be a stretch to say that Escanaba is teeming with attractions and big-city sightseeing opportunities, but it certainly isn’t lacking options. The Sand Point Lighthouse, built shortly after the town’s founding in 1867, is one of the oldest and most important buildings in the region. This fully restored National Historic Landmark has been kept looking new, proving to be a vital addition to the shoreline. The lighthouse has been safely guiding ships to safety for over 150 years, and it is quite pretty too. Be sure to take a tour and climb to the top to see some panoramic views of the lake.

Bonifas Art Gallery is a beloved institution in town, showcasing a variety of different art mediums and styles depending on the exhibit. The Bonifas Fine Art Center even claims to be the “home for all art” in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, so you know they mean business. The community and visitors can take workshops and lessons at this amazing space, or observe works of art crafted by local artists in a place designed to foster a passion for creativity.

The Delta County History Museum is an archive of information concerning the founding of Delta County and its incredible history. There you can find maritime items, old boats, railroad exhibits, Native American artifacts, historic photographs, and much more. The museum is only open May-October, but worth a visit if you are there during those months. If you still thirst for more adventure and sightseeing, head to Iron Mountain or Marquette, two of the larger cities on the northern peninsula.
