Fishlake National Forest is hard to ignore with its immense size and proximity to Fillmore. The forest was established over 100 years ago, with a one and a half million acres of spectacular evergreen forests blanketing heavenly mountain ranges. The Mine Camp Peak is one of the area’s best vista lookout points and the perfect place to test your mettle while hiking to the summit. The most impressive feature in this large forest, however, is the 80,000-year-old cluster of aspen trees, thought to be the heaviest, oldest, and largest living organism on the planet. The world’s oldest recorded non-clonal organism was found in the park, a bristlecone pine tree over 5,000 years old, but it was cut down for research purposes. You can navigate through the park and find several species of endemic wildlife, or take a look at the visitor center for more information about the park’s natural history. Back in Utah, places like Zion National Park and Arches National Park are no more than a few hours’ drive from Fillmore, both worthy of a visit when you rent an RV and are looking for adventure.

This beautiful brick building was only partially completed before the capital was moved to Salt Lake City, yet it stands complete as a testament to Utah’s state pride. You can learn lots about the Utah territory, including its turbulent beginnings as a pioneer destination, its Mormon roots, and its native Ute population. The Tabernacle Hill area of Fillmore features neat natural features, like the 2,000-year-old magma fields and lava tubes left behind by a violent volcanic eruption, devastating the local landscapes while creating caves and craters.

Meadow Hot Spring is a hidden gem, found on private property but open to the public. This rustic hot spring reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees, soothing and relaxing with healing properties. This natural wonder has not been built up, so you have to walk down gravel trails to reach this unassuming spot, but you will be so glad you did.
