Nearly halfway between the cities of Saint George and Salt Lake City in the heart of Utah, the small town of Fillmore continues to draw in large numbers of tourists. Fillmore was chosen by the governor of Utah, Brigham Young, to be the capital of the Utah Territory back in 1851, serving this purpose for five years. The capital was moved to Salt Lake City after a number of disputes with the Ute natives forced the governor to relocate to a safer area.

Now, you can book an RV in Fillmore and relish in the natural beauty of one of the country’s most epic and spectacular outdoor paradises. Teeming with extraordinary national parks, state parks, forests, mountains, and desert canyons, Utah is easy to explore when you rent an RV and take it for a spin throughout the state. Fillmore has its own treasures too, with old buildings, historic forts, amazing temples, and the original capitol building for Utah.

To truly get your fill of jaw-dropping natural features in Utah, you can visit some of the state’s most popular parks and recreation areas to make the most of your vacation. Taking your Fillmore campervan rental to Yuba State Park is always a great idea, especially if you are looking to boat around, take a refreshing dip, or try your hand at fishing in scenic Yuba Lake. The park is also a great place to kayak, hike, or camp in your Fillmore camper rental with captivating views of the lake and the starry skies at night.

Fishlake National Forest is hard to ignore with its immense size and proximity to Fillmore. The forest was established over 100 years ago, with a one and a half million acres of spectacular evergreen forests blanketing heavenly mountain ranges. The Mine Camp Peak is one of the area’s best vista lookout points and the perfect place to test your mettle while hiking to the summit. The most impressive feature in this large forest, however, is the 80,000-year-old cluster of aspen trees, thought to be the heaviest, oldest, and largest living organism on the planet. The clonal stand of aspen trees weighs in at thirteen million pounds, covering an astounding 100 acres.

If you love national parks, you are in luck. The state of Utah has several of the very bests parks you could imagine, yet Great Basin National Park in nearby Nevada is the closest one to town. This incredible park is named for the enormous basin separating the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Wasatch Mountains, full of ancient bristlecone pines, and a labyrinthian system of caves underground. The world’s oldest recorded non-clonal organism was found in the park, a bristlecone pine tree over 5,000 years old, but it was cut down for research purposes. You can navigate through the park and find several species of endemic wildlife, or take a look at the visitor center for more information about the park’s natural history. Back in Utah, places like Zion National Park and Arches National Park are no more than a few hours’ drive from Fillmore, both worthy of a visit when you rent an RV and are looking for adventure.

RV Parks

When you pick up your Fillmore campervan rental in town, you will find there are a few local campground options nearby. Wagons West RV Park is found close to the center of town, with shaded, spacious lots with trees and privacy. There are bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and a camp store covering all the basics you’ll need.

Fillmore KOA is one of the hundreds of KOA campgrounds found throughout the country. Tent camping, RV camping, and cabin rentals are offered at the park, along with a sauna and a hot tub, a pool, walking trails, and a dog park.

Camping in the Fishlake National Park is always an option, with several campgrounds to choose from. Adelaide Campground, Meadow Creek Campground, and Maple Grove Campground are just a few of the rustic camping areas located in the forest.

City Sightseeing

The town of Fillmore is quite small in comparison to some of the state’s other towns and cities, and despite its historical significance to the state, there are not many attractions in the town. There are loads of historical buildings and homes built by the first Mormon settlers in the mid 19th century, and the Territorial Statehouse State Park Museum which commemorates the original capital city of Utah. This beautiful brick building was only partially completed before the capital was moved to Salt Lake City, yet it stands complete as a testament to Utah’s state pride. You can learn lots about the Utah territory, including its turbulent beginnings as a pioneer destination, its Mormon roots, and its native Ute population. There is a cafe on-site in case you need to grab some food while you're here.

The Tabernacle Hill area of Fillmore features neat natural features, like the 2,000-year-old magma fields and lava tubes left behind by a violent volcanic eruption, devastating the local landscapes while creating caves and craters.

Meadow Hot Spring is a hidden gem, found on private property but open to the public. This rustic hot spring reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees, soothing and relaxing with healing properties. This natural wonder has not been built up, so you have to walk down gravel trails to reach this unassuming spot, but you will be so glad you did.
