Originally inhabited by early Mound Builders, the Erie people, and the Iroquois, Fredonia is a historic village near Lake Erie. It was settled by Europeans during the early 19th century as Canadaway before being coined Fredonia by uniting the word “freedom” with a Latin ending.

Today, Fredonia is home to the State University of New York at Fredonia and clusters around a heritage-listed historic district. Its proximity to the waterfront reserves of Lake Erie and the mountain trails of the Appalachians makes it the perfect place to rent an RV while exploring Chautauqua County.

Discover Fredonia

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Fredonia and head to the Boutwell Hill State Forest, which extends across 2,944 acres to the southeast of the village. It’s traversed by the multi-use Earl Cardot Eastside Overland Trail that meanders through woodlands and marshy dikes. Hiking, horseback riding, and biking are the main activities during the summer months while in winter, the reserve is a popular snowshoeing and cross-country skiing destination.

An hour’s drive from Fredonia is the Allegany State Park near Salamanca, which forms part of the Allegheny Highlands forests ecoregion and has been referred to as "the wilderness playground of Western New York.” It’s divided into two main sections - the Red House Area in the northeast and the Quaker area in the southwest - with hiking trails, lakes, and fire towers a feature of both. Stop in at the Old Quaker Store Museum to gain an insight into the park’s history, then get active while hiking to the Bridal Falls, exploring the Bear Caves or hitting the snow at the Art Roscoe Ski Area.

Continue south to the Allegheny National Forest, which sprawls across more than 500,000 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s another hub for recreation, with everything from fishing and boating to hiking, mountain biking, and ATV driving permitted. A visit to the Allegheny National Forest can be combined with a stop at the Kinzua Bridge State Park where you can stroll out across the Kinzua Gorge on a spectacular Skywalk, then peer down through its glass platform.

RV Parks

Pick up your camper rental in Fredonia and make the short drive east to the Arkwright Hills Campground, a family-friendly RV destination in a forested setting. There is a range of campsites with electricity and water hookups, as well as a coin-operated washer and dryer, two playgrounds and Wi-Fi availability.

Alternatively, you can drive north to the Sheridan Bay Park, which is open from May through to September along the shores of Lake Erie. There’s a children’s playground and also a lakeside pavilion available, as well as bathroom and shower amenities.

Directly south of Fredonia is the Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday, which sprawls across 180 wooded acres in Dewittville. There are more than 240 sites to select from, together with a swimming pool, recreational courts, a mini-golf course, and a jumping pad to keep young guests entertained.

Exploring the City

Park your RV rental near Fredonia and stroll through the village to explore the Fredonia Commons Historic District. It encompasses around 25 of the village’s main civic buildings and churches, which cluster around the central commons. Admire the Fenner Fire Station and the U.S. Post Office building, as well as the Darwin R. Baker Library and the 1891 Fredonia Opera House that forms part of the red-brick Village Hall building.

If you’re traveling with kids, spend an afternoon at Point Gratiot Beach, which encompasses a U.S. Coast Guard Naval Reserve Station and a historic lighthouse. There’s a children’s playground and also numerous picnic areas where you can relax, as well as unforgettable sunsets over the waters of Lake Erie. A visit to Point Gratiot Beach can easily be combined with a stop at nearby Canadaway Creek to see where it empties into the vast lake.

If you’re visiting Point Gratiot, take time to tour the Dunkirk Lighthouse, a dressed stone and rubblestone tower that was established in 1826. The Fresnel lens that was installed in 1857 is still in operation today, and the lighthouse has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Admire its square-shaped architecture in a red and white design, then climb to the top of the lighthouse for sweeping views across Lake Erie.

Fredonia has a well-stocked supermarket with all the groceries you need, as well as a handful of fast food restaurants and eateries if you want to dine out. There are also gas stations if you need to fill up your motorhome rental in Fredonia.
