The first known settler was Issac Batterson, who moved to the area with his family in 1833. He purchased a portion of the land from a Texan rancher who owned several thousand acres. Once the Batterson home was built, a few other residents moved in and built homes nearby. The colony, which was originally named Clinton, didn’t really take off till the early 1900s. At that time, Clinton applied for a post office to make things official, and the request was rejected on the premise that there was another town with the same name. The name, Galena Park, was chosen in a nod to the Galena-Signal Oil Company, which was a major employer at the time. With the new name, the request was approved.

Galena Park was once considered a port town, but the harbor administrators tightened the security considerably after 9/11, restricting sailors’ mobility while at port. Today, the town is a quiet bedroom community for Houston. The easy access to the high-octane downtown area makes Galena Park a compelling town in which to search for an RV rental.

Discover Galena Park

The Great Outdoors

It’s every adventurer’s dream: to explore lands virtually untouched by mankind and watch wild animals in a natural setting. The reality isn’t always so fun, though. Mosquitoes, humidity, and leaky tents. Renting an RV in Galena Park is the perfect solution to those problems. There are several wilderness parks in the area. The largest is the Sam Houston National Forest, which boasts a whopping 163,000 acres of pure wilderness. Deer are plentiful, and so are feral hogs. Heads up: if you see a feral hog, retreat. They can be highly aggressive. For the most part, they avoid the highly trafficked trails, though. The longest trail in Sam Houston National Forest is the Lone Star Trail, which is an impressive 50 miles. It winds through mature pine and hardwood forests, around lakes, and through fresh, bright meadows. After the first 5 miles or so, traffic on this trail dwindles significantly. Bring your Galena camper rental as there are three developed campgrounds with hookups, restrooms, and showers. Some of the other campgrounds welcome RVs and motorhomes, but lack hookups.

A few miles to the southeast, birders and photographers will feel like they’ve hit the jackpot at McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. Hundreds of different avian species flock to this stretch of shoreline. Outdoorsmen and adventurers can also go crabbing and fishing along the beaches. Common species include red drum, flounder, alligator gar, catfish, and blue crab. Though the beach stretches over 30 miles, hiking is limited to a few trails, primarily because the marshy terrain and dunes make it difficult to establish trails. Waterfowl hunting is allowed during the appropriate season. Although camping at the refuge is not allowed, there are a handful of private RV campgrounds right on the beach that can accommodate most smaller rental RVs.

RV Parks

When searching for an RV rental, don’t forget to plan for overnight stays. Street parking is discouraged. Houston Metro area is very friendly to the RV community, and there are several RV parks and campgrounds nearby. East Park Village RV Park in Channelview, for example, touts a countryside atmosphere in an urban setting. It features amenities like 30/50 amps, roomy lots with shade trees, and easy access to fishing.

Southeast of Baytown, the Beach City RV Resort may be appealing for some. Overlooking the Trinity Bay, the intimate campground offers 30/50 amps, WiFi, and easy access to the waterfront and the other nearby attractions.

Exploring the City

Why constrain yourself to downtown Houston when a Galena Park luxury RV rental makes it so easy to get around and explore? Visitors don’t need astronaut training to tour the NASA’s Johnson Center and the Space Center, south of Houston. The Space Center is a leading space exploration and science multisensory center. It has, among many exhibits, a VR simulator in which visitors can embark on a spacewalk aboard the International Space Station, and a motion simulator that mimics a zero-gravity environment.

Pretend to be Spiderman and “spider” up a sheer wall. The Space City Rock Climbing facility in League City is the largest indoor rock gym in the Bay area, and it has a wide range of routes with different challenges to master. With over 5,000 square feet of rocks, climbers will never be bored. Harness and shoe rentals are available.

Crack a cold one at Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest craft beer company in Houston-Metro area. Saint Arnold has a variety of award-winning, tasty beer, including a German-style Kolsch, a few different IPAs and ales, and their specialty drink: an old-fashioned root beer float! With a little creativity, an adventuring spirit and the perfect RV rental, it’s easy to make new memories that’ll last a lifetime!
