Gloucester City is a town in Camden County, New Jersey, that was incorporated in 1868 from portions of Union Township. It is across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, and it began around 1620 as a fort used for trade, primarily in beaver pelts. However, most of the trading occurred across the river, prompting the fort's founder to relocate the fort to the opposing side of the river. The city has been host to many celebrities in the past. The Philadelphia Athletics called a local baseball stadium home from 1888 to 1890; world champion boxer John L. Sullivan had an exhibition match in Gloucester City with wrestling champion William Muldoon; and Annie Oakley put on an exhibition here twice, once in 1888 with the Pawnee Bill Frontier Exhibition and again in 1898.

RV rentals in Camden County are a good place to start as you book your epic vacation. Other communities are also worth visiting at least once. Mount Holly has a long list of celebrity residents, including Cindy Birdsong who joined Diana Ross & the Supremes in 1967. Lakehurst is home to Grammy award winner and pop-country music artist Juice Newton. Berlin was originally a stagecoach stopover named Longacoming for travelers moving between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Glassboro is home to Rowan University, founded in 1923 as Glassboro State College, which was, in turn, the venue for a political summit between President Lynden B. Johnson and Alexei Kosygin in 1967. Swedesboro was recognized in 2000 as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Your Gloucester City travel trailer rental is your introduction to the history and culture of this city and county.

The Great Outdoors

Brendan T. Byrne State Forest was formerly home to the Lebanon Glass Works factory which clearcut the forest in order to operate its furnace. The factory was shut down in 1867 and today, the area is once again a pine forest with streams and swampland hosting Atlantic white cedar stands. The forest has miles of clearly marked trails where visitors can hike and observe the landscape; some of the trails allow mountain bike riding while others are suitable for wheelchairs and guests with disabilities. In the winter, the forest is a popular destination for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Hikers will see some remains of the former glass factory buildings while enjoying the venue. Keep your Gloucester City RV trailer rental nearby, and you can enjoy a hot lunch between outings and return to comfort when you are done.

Allaire State Park has miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, some of which are clearly marked and others not. Some of the trails have boardwalks to protect the plants and vegetation from being trampled. The park has a visitor center and museum, with exhibits displaying the area's history, and also live steam and diesel trains that visitors can ride. The park is centered around Allaire Village, which hosts historical events, antique, art, and craft shows, and flea markets.

Timber Creek Dog Park is a cultivated outdoor resource with restrooms and water fountains, a walking track that circles the park, and cross-country and natural (unpaved) trails. The trails make their way through both wooded areas and open fields, allowing visitors an opportunity to observe the wildlife that exists there and the undergrowth and flower species too.

RV Parks

There are a number of RV parks and campgrounds near Gloucester City but some of them are farther out, and some exclusively have mobile homes. Your Gloucester City camper rental is your guarantee of a relaxing and enjoyable vacation.

Old Cedar Campground is a quiet and rustic RV park nestled amongst shade-giving trees. The park owners host social events for their guests on weekends, inviting everyone. Other amenities include a swimming pool, a playground, a miniature golf course, and much more. Individual sites include full hookups and Wi-Fi and are large enough to give everyone elbow space. There is a bathhouse and also a laundromat, a camp store, and guests can purchase propane, firewood, and ice.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do in and around Gloucester City, starting with the museums of which there are quite a few. One of the museums is dedicated to the history of Jewish Americans and does a good job of explaining the culture, including presenting some facts that are not commonly known. Another museum is an actual U.S. Navy warship with its own memorial; it has both guided and self-guided tours where guests can view the captain's and crew's quarters, look inside a real gun turret, and more. One good side stop that most will enjoy is at the headstone of Walt Whitman, one of America's most widely known singers and entertainers. Those who don't mind taking a day trip into nearby Philadelphia will be rewarded with a glimpse of the pop culture “Rocky” statue from the Rocky movie franchise. Some historical monuments include the Liberty Bell Center, an observation deck at One Liberty Place, and the Franklin Institute, named for Benjamin Franklin and acting as a science and learning center. Be sure to take your Gloucester City RV rental for a drive out on the highways while you have the chance; you'll be glad you did.

When it's time for dinner, Gloucester City has a variety of cuisines on hand ranging in price from inexpensive to fine dining. A reasonably priced bistro is located in a scenic walking neighborhood and has pasta, seafood, and meat options. It has a romantic, quiet atmosphere and live piano music on some weekend evenings (it is open for dinner only). Portions aren't huge but are larger than normal for fine dining, and they can accommodate takeout requests; don't be shy about taking your dinner home to your luxury RV rental near Gloucester City to enjoy it under a star-filled sky.
