Grant is located on the far western edge of Nebraska, near its border with Colorado. It’s about half an hour's drive south of the Interstate 80 though, so it doesn’t see any of the traffic going between Denver and Nebraska’s larger cities in the east. When you rent an RV in Grant, you’ll have the chance to experience a unique locale without all the crowds found in more popular tourist destinations.

Discover Grant

The Great Outdoors

There are no soaring peaks or glistening alpine lakes to enjoy in western Nebraska, but that doesn’t mean that outdoor enthusiasts should shy away from getting an RV rental in Grant, NE. The nearby South Platte River and its accompanying lakes have loads of recreational potential.

Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area is a gem that’s not far from Grant and is one of Nebraska’s largest reservoir. It boasts some fantastic sandy beaches and tons of space for fishing and watersports. Lake Ogallala sits adjacent to McConaughy and has much rockier shores, but is known for its excellent angling opportunities.

Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area is a little bit to the east on Interstate 80 and offers a similar experience with fewer visitors. There’s a golf course overlooking the lake and a few hiking trails to explore for some light exercise. There’s also a dock to launch a boat, which can be rented in nearby Ogallala.

If you’re up for the adventure, pack up the Grant campervan rental and head to Pawnee National Grasslands, which is one of the best spots in the region for bison sighting. The majestic creatures are free to roam the vast expanse of prairie much the same as they did over 150 years ago. If you’re interested in plains ecology, there are dozens of grass and shrub species that are native to the region and are uncommon in more developed parts of the Midwest.

RV Parks

One of the most convenient places to camp with your motorhome rental near Grant, NE, is right in the middle of town – Plainsman Inn and RV Park. It’s actually a motel with a small RV park behind it, but they offer full hookups along with BBQ grills and coin-op laundry facilities. Sites have shade too, so this could be a great place to relax with your RV rental in Grant. The park is within walking distance of a couple of convenience stores, a city park, and a few of the town's restaurants.

The next closest option, Country View Campgrounds, is a little less than a half hour's drive to the north in Ogallala on the South Platte River. The campground has excellent amenities including full hookups for your travel trailer rental from Grant, laundry facilities, a playground, an outdoor swimming pool, and even a small antique store. Access to cable TV and Wi-Fi is available, and the campground is pet-friendly. Ogallala has some fantastic tourist attractions related to frontier living that are great for the kids, making this one of the best places to consider camping with a family when you book an RV in Grant.

It’s also possible to camp in the parking lot of Ogallala’s Walmart if you get the manager’s permission first. This would be dry camping and limited to only a few nights, but if you need to use a dump station, there is a truck stop close by at the intersection of Highway 61 and Interstate 80.

Exploring the City

There are only a handful of diners, convenience stores, and supermarkets along Grant’s main street, so you’ll most likely need to go up to Ogallala or one of the other surrounding communities to find restaurants and attractions when you have a camper rental in Grant.

For a fun day trip, consider hopping over the border to Julesburg, Colorado to watch a movie at the Hippodrome Arts Center. It’s a single screen setup but housed in a beautifully renovated theater that makes it well worth the trip even if the film you watch isn’t that great.

If you’re in need of a big-city experience (by western Nebraska standards), head to North Platte, the economic and cultural hub of the region. You can immerse yourself in the area’s rich railroading history (the Bailey train yard is the largest in the world), while also having a much wider selection of restaurants, bars, and shopping. There’s also a fantastic children’s museum where the little ones can enjoy highly interactive exhibits focusing on how businesses are run, how food is made, and of course, how trains operate.
