Grover is a statutory town in Weld, Colorado, that was first established as a post office in the late 1800s, servicing ranches in the area; it was located approximately half a mile from where the town now resides. The area was originally called “Point of Rocks” but was renamed around 1880 after the owner of the house that acted as the post office, Mrs. Dolly Donovan (Grover was her maiden name). The Burlington Railroad arrived in 1887 and by 1889, the town included a depot (the town's activity hub), two hotels, a bank, and a few businesses. The post office, the first along the Burlington line, has operated without any closures ever since; the railway line ceased operations in 1973 and the depot is now the Grover Depot Museum. The town had a female mayor and an all-female town board in 1929, after the women grew impatient over the antics of a pool hall proprietor (and, presumably, his male clients); taking matters into their own hands, they reduced the civic debt significantly, something the previous boards had not achieved.

Book an RV in Weld County and you are perched up high, perfectly situated to take in the scenic countryside and state history as you explore. Some other towns and cities that could be of interest include the following: Raymer, which is also known as New Raymer, since the state of Colorado and U.S. Postal Service began to disagree in 1909 over the proper name, continuing the feud up to present day; Weldona, which is the name of the town and the post office it is centered around (both were named after a General Weldon); Briggsdale, which was founded by Frank N. Briggs, a farmer, in 1909; Greeley, which voted to end temperance and allow the sale of alcohol in 1969 (the act barely passed by a mere 477 votes); and LaPorte, which was first settled by French Canadian trappers as early as 1828 (Kit Carson was said to have settled here temporarily in 1849). Your Grover travel trailer rental is the first step in exploring the history of this area.

The Great Outdoors

Pawnee National Grassland is a popular recreational preserve where the public can enjoy hiking and biking, horseback riding, and camping; hunting and fishing are allowed in season but licenses are required. The park's purpose is to promote outdoor activity on a limited basis while protecting and preserving the existing ecosystems within.

Soapstone Prairie Natural Area is a multi-use area, combining important archeological research and education with public recreation. Visitors to the area can hike the many trails, observe the wildlife, and take photographs, or attend educational events and activities in the mid-summer to early fall. Studies have discovered that the area was home to human activity as early as 12,000 years ago. Visitors are asked to stay on the trails and plan their activities accordingly.

Red Mountain Open Space is an undeveloped recreational area, open from dawn to dusk in the spring, summer, and fall. Permitted activities are hiking and biking, horseback riding, and picnicking. There are established picnic areas with tables and restrooms located intermittently. Keep your Grover camper rental nearby and you can return to comfort when you're done.

Exploring The City

There is a lot to see and do near Grover; bookworms coming to visit Weld County might want to peruse James Michener's novel Centennial to learn about the area or even use it as a guide to plan their own self-guided tour. The area is flat grassland with the Pawnee Buttes rising up in the distance. Birdwatching is as breathtaking in this area as hiking, and past birdwatchers have documented seeing hundreds of different bird species. The Pawnee Pioneer Trails Scenic and Historic Byway passes through Grover heading into East Colorado; this is your opportunity to jump behind the wheel of your Grover RV rental and do what RVs were meant to do. Hit the open road, step on the gas and see what's out there.

There are a number of restaurants not far from Grover; some of them are commercial chain establishments but most are locally owned and operated. One local family-run diner prides itself on creating quality meals from scratch using only fresh ingredients. Dine-in customers can watch planes land and take off from the nearby runway as they enjoy their food. Another diner presents itself with simple decor but is spotlessly clean, offering reasonably priced meals with big portions. It specializes in comfort foods, nothing unfamiliar but delicious and filling. Diners should expect to take some of their meal home with them to their Grover luxury RV rental to enjoy later as a late night snack or next day's lunch. There is no shame here, no one is watching and diets can always be continued post-vacation.
