After the infamous Land Run of 1889 which saw hordes of settlers scramble west to claim land in the Oklahoma Territory, Guthrie would become one of the fastest growing cities in the region. Before the land run, Guthrie was merely a tiny railroad stop along the Southern Kansas Railway. This delightful suburb of Oklahoma City was once the star of the show, serving as the state’s first capital after the territory became a state. Guthrie was inundated with new people every day, and its infrastructure, mass transit systems, and buildings were built to reflect this.

Guthrie would eventually be eclipsed in population and importance due to the number of railways passing through Oklahoma City, and later lose its title as state capital. Now, Guthrie is a tourism hotspot, known especially for its elegant Victorian buildings and for having the largest urban historic area in the state. The population may have dwindled due to the city’s loss of status, but it is as charming and wonderful as ever to visit when you rent an RV.

When you book an RV in Guthrie, there is plenty to do and see, especially if you like partying and enjoying music. The Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival draws thousands of people each October to dance and celebrate a wonderful folk music tradition. The National Finals Steer Roping Rodeo is held in Guthrie, giving visitors a taste of the old wild west.
