Half Moon Bay is a delightful little town by the sea, located west of San Jose and south of San Francisco in northern California. The community was one of the first in the area, and was once known as San Benito and later on, Spanishtown. Half Moon Bay was finally chosen as the permanent name for the town in 1874 and at that point, it was a thriving community with a diverse population from all over the globe.

These days, Half Moon Bay is as charming as ever, with a bevy of historic homes, churches, and other buildings built over a century ago. Remnants of abandoned ghost towns and pristine beaches on the renowned California coastline add to the list of reasons why you should book an RV in Half Moon Bay. With its proximity to several metropolitan centers and lots of incredible nature reserves, it's no wonder why the town is such a popular place to rent an RV. A ride north or south along California Highway 1 is just about the best thing you can do with your Half Moon Bay camper rental to enjoy the Golden State and all of the wonders within.

Outdoors Adventures

California is an extremely outdoor-friendly state to find yourself in on vacation, with countless places to encounter and not nearly enough time to see everything. It is important to plan a strategy for tackling this issue before you arrive in Half Moon Bay to rent an RV because the number of choices can be a bit overwhelming. There are several state parks within a short distance of town that you can visit, like Butano State Park. Butano State Park is home to ancient canyons filled with iconic redwood trees that are endemic to Northern California. There are miles of relaxing hiking trails cutting through the dense forest, and several campgrounds where you can park your Half Moon Bay RV rental by owner. Portola Redwoods State Park is minutes away from Butano State Park and is also home to the majestic redwood trees, widely considered to be the largest trees on Earth. There are many small creeks and waterways in the redwood forest, and some hidden waterfalls you can find when you explore the large reserve. Camping is also an option at this park, as is the case with most state parks in California.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is one of the most well-known in all of California, especially for its legendary stretch of highway along the Pacific coast. The park is nicknamed “little Yosemite” by locals for its ethereal qualities and variety of different ecosystems. You can hike at the park, go for a bike ride, fish, kayak, or go for a swim along the undeveloped beaches. There is a massive lodge that guests can stay at while visiting the park, as well as a campground for you and your Half Moon Bay motorhome rental to rest peacefully at.

Pinnacles National Park might not be too well known just yet, as it is one of the newest established national parks in the US. This little gem of an outdoor area is full of mysterious caves and remnants of a now-extinct volcano. Rock climbers frequent the park to find different routes to climb, from beginners to experts, it makes no difference. There are plenty of other incredible national parks to visit in California, but none are as close as Pinnacles to the small city of Half Moon Bay.

RV Parks to Visit

Part of planning an RV rental vacation involves pinpointing some great campgrounds to visit. Luckily, there are plenty of choices between the state parks and nearby city centers. Half Moon Bay RV Park is one of the places to consider. This park has its own nature trails and private beaches for guests to enjoy.

Pillar Point RV Park has spacious campsites with views of the Pacific Ocean, with all the soothing smells and sounds of the sea. Pelican Point RV Park is also located in Half Moon Bay, with views overlooking the ocean. There is a convenience store on site where you can stock up if you don't feel like driving back to town to shop.

You can stay at any of the state parks south of town in your Half Moon Bay camper rental, or head up to San Francisco and stay at San Francisco RV Resort for a taste of the city life. The resort has a playground, BBQ pits, and a refreshing pool to enjoy.

City Sightseeing

One of the first things you’ll notice when driving through downtown Half Moon Bay is the myriad of small boutiques, classy restaurants, and lots of distilleries and wineries. There aren't’ a whole lot of attractions to speak of in Half Moon Bay but a drive to any of the neighboring towns yields a flurry of interesting options. A long pool sits in front of the monument, making for beautiful scenery in photographs.

The San Mateo Japanese Garden is a tranquil park in the heart of downtown San Mateo, with Japanese gazebos, pagodas, and teahouses surrounded by breathtaking plants and flowers. The garden is a serene place to collect your thoughts and meditate.
