Hamshire is a small town in the south of Texas, halfway between Beaumont and Baytown and close to Interstate 10 that links the two cities. Book an RV in Hamshire and travel just over an hour away across the San Jacinto River to the metropolis of Houston.

The town was first inhabited around 1870 when it was developed by Lovan Hamshire, and by the 1890s a post office was established in the town for the Gulf and Interstate Railway that ran right past.

Being close to the Gulf of Mexico coastline, the terrain here is generally prairie leading into marshland as you approach the coast. There are many wildlife refugees in this area, leaving it undisturbed by urban sprawl and quite beautiful. When you book an RV rental in Hamshire, you have easy access to the beautiful coastline, open countryside, and sprawling cities.

Discover Hamshire

The Great Outdoors

Take your luxury RV rental form Hamshire over the state line and visit the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, in Louisiana. Covering over 124,000 acres and including several lakes, it’s the largest marsh refuge on the Gulf Coast. Around 200 species of birds can be found here including ducks, geese, cormorants, egrets, and other wading birds. Other animals include American alligators, American mink, otter and turtles, among others. From the visitor center, you can collect a guide to the Wetland Walkway which takes you on a 1.5-mile nature trail through the refuge. Along the route are an observation tower and knowledge stations with information on the Gulf Coast and the marshland.

Less than a 10-mile drive south in a camper rental from Hamshire is the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is an important resting and feeding habitat for migrating birds, and many species come here for the winter. During some periods the flocks of snow geese have numbered more than 70,000 birds. The area is also perfect for the American alligator and has one of the largest populations in Texas. Other animals that you may see include armadillo, fox, bobcat, and skunk.

Head inland and the Sam Houston National Forest is definitely worth a visit. Located a little north of Houston, the park offers great opportunities to spot wildlife along with a full range of recreational activities. The 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail passes through the forest and is well marked, plus there are several other marked routes to follow. Camping is allowed in certain areas, and there are areas that can take RVs, so take your motorhome rental from Hamshire and enjoy this beautiful area.

RV Parks

One of the benefits, when you rent a motorhome in Hamshire, is the proximity to the coastline and the High Island RV Park could be a great base for exploring the area. It’s only a small campground, with just 25 sites, but they all have electrical hook-up, free WiFi and free ice! There’s no swimming pool, but it’s located right on the Gulf of Mexico for swimming and strolls on the beach. You’ll also find wash-rooms and laundry on site, and there’s a free ferry to Galveston plus restaurants and shops are only a block away.

Less than five miles southwest from Hamshire in your rental RV is the town of Winnie, and here you’ll find several RV parks. Nearby is the Bearazinga RV Park which is located in a small wooded area on the edge of a lake providing a quiet and secluded vacation spot. All the campground sites have full hook-up with free WiFi and a full laundry center. If you have a boat, you can get onto the lake straight away with the conveniently located boat ramps.

Exploring the City

As a small community, Hamshire is a little limited on amenities but does have a couple of cafes and a gas station. The nearby town of Winnie has a much wider selection of restaurants including Mexican, Chinese, a steakhouse and a range of fast-food places.

Locally, there are a number of attractions including the Clifton Steamboat Museum just outside Beaumont. The museum is dedicated not only to the steamboat era but also the wars fought in Texas and Louisiana, WW1, WW2, Vietnam, and others. Inside are two floors of exhibits celebrating the museum’s theme of “heroes, past, present, and future." Outside is the restored steam tug Hercules.

Texas is well known for its alligators, so a visit to Gator Country adventure park should be on your vacation itinerary. Founded in 2005, the park is now home to over 450 American alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles, plus various rescue animals they have taken in! They offer a range of experiences from feeding the alligators to actually wading in the water with them. Not for the faint-hearted! You can also take a swamp tour in their speedboat with a full ecological tour and knowledgeable guide.
