William Tucker is one of the first, if not the very first settlers in the Harrison Township area. During a Chippewa raid in Virginia, his parents were killed, and young William was kidnapped. The tribe took him up to Lake Erie where he resided for many years. Eventually, William was accepted into the tribe. At 18 years old, his adoptive family encouraged him to return to the White Man world, and William obtained work as a guide and interpreter at Fort Detroit, MI. William was a double agent; he frequently would protect the local Native Americans or warn them away while doing the same for the British troops. The Chippewa Native Americans, in return for William’s bravery, rewarded him with a portion of their hunting lands. This land, upon which William built his home, is now a small Air National Guard Base on the northern end of Harrison Charter Township. The home was built in 1784, and it’s purported to be the first residential home built in Michigan (though this claim is in some dispute). The Tucker home is still standing today.

Nicknamed “BoatTown USA," Harrison Charter Township has the largest number of marinas and docks out of all the other Lake St. Clair towns.

Today the township’s is shared with a small Air National Guard Base, which takes up the northern side of Clinton River. The closest large town is Charter Township of Clinton, seven miles west. Detroit is about 30 miles southwest. Close enough that Detroit is a short drive away, yet far enough that the slower pace of life and outdoors can be enjoyed in quiet, Harrison Charter Township is an ideal place to grab an RV rental.

The Great Outdoors

A travel trailer rental in Harrison Charter Township means a world of fresh, clean air, adventure, and nature. On the United States’ side of the USA-Canada border, there are many boat launches and marinas, a good number of which are right in the township. Several marinas have boats for rent, ranging from jet-skis to fishing boats to kayaks. Lake St. Clair has a reputation for having the best muskie and walleye fishing in the world. If fishing is too much like watching paint dry, head over to one of the beaches along the shoreline. Swim, windsurf, suntan, and play beach games. Diving also is a popular activity. There are a dozen known shipwrecks, and likely several more lurking in the deeper waters. These shipwrecks were rum runners who transported illegal alcohol from Canada to the USA during the 1920s Prohibition era. Though most shipwrecks have been picked clean, divers still occasionally find an intact bottle of moonshine and rum, particularly after a storm churns up the sediment.

Itching to stretch your legs on solid land? The River Bends Park is a modest 850-acre park. It connects to other neighboring parks via trails and in one instance, a short stretch of roadside sidewalk. Combined with Bloomer, Chief Gene Shepherd, Hollands Pond, and Gerald N Donovan parks, there’s a little over 5,000 acres of recreational fun. Hike, bike, and explore the rolling hills and streams. Find out whether you’re a budding Robin Hood at the archery range. RC/drone flying is permitted, which is a rarity this close to a city. In wintertime, cross-country ski, ice skate, or sled down one of the open-space hills. Bloomer Park has a Velodrome, which is a racing course for pro bike riders. Though camping isn’t allowed, the parking lots are roomy and can accommodate your Harrison Charter Township camper rental.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Harrison Charter Township, MI, be sure to consider where you’ll park overnight or while you are out exploring these parts of Michigan. Though most public parks in this part of Michigan disallow overnight camping, there are several private RV campgrounds and resorts available.

Algonac State Parks is one of the few public parks that allow overnight RV camping in southeastern Michigan. Up near Marine City, its main appeal is its proximity to the St. Clair River, and watching freighters drift by all day and bankside fishing are activities enjoyed by many. A rustic campground, amenities are scarce beyond the basic restroom facilities and water access.

Northpointe Shores RV Resort has several amenities and features that will delight visitors. The upscale resort features a private boat launch and marina, and free WiFi. As an added bonus, it allows up to two dogs.

In a pinch, a Walmart store may work for an unplanned stop overnight. Walmart is very RV-friendly, and are known to allow those with an RV to stay overnight in the parking lot. There are about 10 Walmart locations within 10 miles of Harrison Charter Township. The closest is in Chesterfield, MI.

There’s nothing like fresh homemade apple cider or ice cream.
