The area that would later become Hegins saw its first settler in the area, a half-Indian who went by the name Hager. He lived in the area in 1775. Heginsville, later shortened to Hegins, was officially founded in 1850 when a post office was built, and the locals chose its name in a nod to a respected judge, Judge Hegins. The main industries in the town during the 19th century were a small grist mill (flour), sawmills, and coal mines.

Hegins was at one time known for its annual pigeon shoots, which drew tens of thousand participants and spectators. Billed as a “gentleman’s pastime,” the annual event ran from 1934 till 1998. The event halted in 1999 when animal activists organized protests, citing excessive animal cruelty. In lieu of the pigeon shoots, Hegins now hosts an annual wine festival at which attendants can sample the local wineries’ products, learn about their businesses, and of course shop. It’s held over the Labor Day weekend.

If you’ve ever wanted to explore Pennsylvania without contending with tourists, renting an RV rental is a great way to do it.

Discover Hegins

The Great Outdoors

Book a motorhome in Hegins, and you will have greater flexibility in exploring the Pennsylvania backwoods. The Pennsylvania Game Commission owns and manages 1.5 million acres of state game lands. The closest patch, No. 264, is almost 9,000 acres with a mix of terrains including mountains and floodplains that are known locally as “Cumming’s Swamp.” A mixed-use park, there are over 15 miles of maintained paths and several more miles of unofficial trails made by local wildlife. Typical hunting catches include deer, black bear, turkey, grouse, and squirrels.

A larger game land park, a few minutes further south, encompasses over 44,000 acres. The Appalachian Trail passes through this park, as does Horse-Shoe Trail. Between these two well-known trails and other trails, there are around 100 miles of scenic hiking, biking, and horseback-riding fun. The terrain is mostly wooded with patches of airy meadows. Several small streams and creeks wind through the woods, providing excellent trout fishing. Primary game species for hunting include deer, squirrel, grouse, and turkey. Bears are occasionally sighted in this park.

Hunters intending to set up stands and hides for hunting in any state game lands must obtain appropriate permits as well as have a license for the guns they will be using. The game commission managers are strict and have been known to enact fines for violations for exceeding bag limits or hunting outside the appropriate seasons. During the prime hunting season, which runs from October till early December, all persons entering a game land park, regardless of whether they’re hunting or not, are advised to wear blaze orange for safety. Bring your Hegins camper rental for the parks allow camping, though the facilities, if any, are barebone.

RV Parks

When you rent an RV, be sure to take a moment to figure out where you’ll park overnight. There are a number of both public and private campgrounds in the area. Camp-A-While may be a good candidate. In addition to being close to nature trails and fishing ponds, it also offers family-friendly amenities like a swimming pool, arcade and game room, and a playground.

Echo Valley Campground is nestled in between the Mahantango and Appalachian mountain ranges. Several lots are also ADA-accessible. Every weekend, weather permitting, the staff plays a recently released movie in a “walk-in” theater.

Exploring the City

A Hegins travel trailer rental makes it incredibly easy to get around central Pennsylvania and to find your adventure. The Rausch Creek Off-Road Park in Pine Grove is one of the few legal off-roading parks in Pennsylvania. Go off-roading with a four-wheel drive Jeep, truck, or SUV. The 3,000 acres park has a mix of easy, intermediate, and challenging trails. Heads up: there is a two-vehicle minimum, in case a driver gets stuck in a mud bowl and needs rescuing.

Central Pennsylvania’s climate is quite ideal for growing grapes despite its harsh winters. As a result, there are several wineries in the area. The Benigna’s Creek Winery in Klingerstown consistently produces several award-winning wines and has seized the covetous “Top-10 Pennsylvania Wines” label. The tasting room is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday.

Harrisburg, the seat of the state capital, is only 50 miles southwest. Restaurants, pubs, cafes, and nightclubs line both sides of the river. Dine on the western side and enjoy the backdrop of the dazzling city lights glimmering on the water while boats float serenely by. Dance the night away to the latest, hottest cover and garage bands at the downtown nightclub, and wrap up your evening by dropping by a local late-night favorite, Palumbo’s Italian Eatery, which has been in the biz for 50 years.

You and your Hegins luxury motorhome rental will have fun traveling the twisty back roads that connect the less-visited small towns. Visit the water for a great Italian meal, relax by a campfire, watch a sunset, and enjoy the scenery. Rent a motorhome in Hegins, PA, and enjoy exploring Pennsylvania.
