The town of Hemlock, Michigan, is a small community located between the thumb and forefinger of Michigan’s mitten shape. It’s not too far from the city of Saginaw though if you’re in need of some city amenities. However, one of the best things about choosing to book an RV in Hemlock is that you won’t need to deal with traffic and crowds that come with larger cities.

Hemlock and nearby communities like Midland and Richland Township are popular jumping-off points for exploring the beauty of northern Michigan. Their proximity to Lake Huron and the vast swaths of forest to the north make the region an ideal vacation destination for those wanting to spend more time outside. The area is also rich in history, with many of the towns around Saginaw having a fascinating industrial past that’s worth learning about.

The Great Outdoors

A visit to the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is an absolute must if you’re a nature lover with a camper rental from Hemlock. It’s home to over 200 species of birds and is one of the most important habitats for waterfowl migrating from Canada to warmer climates during the winter. During the spring runoff, much of the refuge floods, which can be quite interesting to explore if you rent a kayak from one of the nearby sporting goods stores. Later in the season, when water levels drop, you can enjoy the many trails that crisscross the refuge.

There’s also Richland Township Park, which is one of the few green spaces within the Hemlock city limits, but it’s a great place to have a picnic with the family or just let the kids run off some excess energy. There’s even some playground equipment for the little ones.

If you book a motorhome rental in Hemlock during the winter months, be sure to block out a day for visiting Apple Mountain ski hill. It’s nothing like the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains or the steep slopes of New England (the chair lifts are quite short), but it’s a great family-friendly hill where beginners can really get the hang of skiing or snowboarding.

RV Parks

Hemlock’s small size and proximity to large cities with greater tourist potential mean that there are no RV parks in town or right outside of it. One of the closest parks is Four Seasons RV Park, which is just outside of Midland and conveniently located on Route 10. It has a three-acre pond for fishing and kayaking, along with a pool and hot tub for relaxing at the end of a hard day of exploring the surrounding area. Sites also have full hookups and there are tons of organized activities where you can meet up with fellow travelers.

If you love the beach, you’ll definitely want to consider staying on Lake Huron at Finn Road Park in Essexville when you get a travel trailer rental in Hemlock. Sites there have full hookups, but perhaps more importantly, some excellent lakefront hiking trails and a boat launch on Saginaw Bay. If your motorhome rental in Hemlock experience is to include some time on the lake, this could be an excellent camping location.

There’s also the option of camping with the Hemlock RV rental at the nearest Walmart on the western edge of Saginaw. You’ll need to ask for the manager’s permission first, and there won’t be any amenities to speak of, but it could be a suitable choice if you’re only staying for a couple of nights.

Exploring the City

One of the more fascinating sights in the Hemlock area is the Castle Museum in Saginaw. Inside this medieval-looking structure are loads of exhibits pertaining to the history of Mid Michigan, from its distant past and archeological finds to its more modern role as a trading and lumber center for the Great Lakes region. If you’re interested in learning about the history of Hemlock, Saginaw, and the surrounding area, this is one of the best places to do it.

If you’re bringing the kids along, you’ll also want to stop at the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum. It’s the largest of its kind north of Detroit and has tons of great hands-on exhibits that will get your children thinking about the world in different ways. If they’ve had to endure a lot of time on the road, this is an excellent place to let them get all that pent up energy out in a creative and productive way.

In spite of its small size, Hemlock has a fairly extensive restaurant scene, though most of it sticks to American staples like burgers and pizza. For more variety and fine dining, you’ll need to make the short trip to Saginaw where there are even more options. If you decide to make your way down towards the Detroit area, you’ll also want to try the regional favorite: Detroit-style pizza. It’s a thick crust variety, with a crispy edge that comes from being baked in a tray that’s quite similar to ones you’d find in use at the area’s automobile factories.
