Hiawassee is a city in and the seat of Towns County, Georgia, near the North Carolina border. It is set in the Appalachian Mountains, a geography that defines the people who live there. Numerous trails cross the mountain in different directions, all originating from Hiawassee; the town sits on the shoreline of Lake Chatuge and is a short distance from Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest mountain. Begin your vacation by parking your Hiawassee RV rental near the lake to take in the splendid views.

RV rentals in Towns County are a perfect match for this rugged and mountainous terrain. Other notable and interesting nearby cities include Helen, Gainesville, Young Harris, Blairsville, and Blue Ridge. Gainesville, also known as a City of Excellence, is the center of Northeast Georgia's tourism industry and economy. Blairsville is home to a gift store run by a former Disney artist who makes Disney-style models, fairy cottages and more. Your Hiawassee travel trailer rental is the only invitation you need to access these other destinations.

The Great Outdoors

Bell Mountain is a rocky summit with an observation deck. At an elevation of 3,000 feet, it provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountain area and valleys. It became a public park in 2016 and some of the rock surface at the summit is marked with graffiti. Hiking to the peak is a popular (but difficult) activity, and guests here can picnic while enjoying the breathtaking views.

At an even higher elevation (4,000 feet), Brasstown Bald is at the center of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. It can be reached by shuttle bus or by hiking the trails to the top. There is a museum dedicated to the area, and from the observation deck, guests can see four different states. Either of these peaks (Bell Mountain or Brasstown) is the perfect venue for taking some magnificent and inspiring photographs.

South of Hiawassee, High Shoals Falls is an epic waterfall consisting of five separate falls, each one above and leading down to the next one. The combined falls have a total height of 300 feet; they can be reached via the High Shoals Trails, which has viewing platforms placed intermittently along the path.

RV Parks

There are several RV parks and campgrounds not far from Hiawassee. These establishments have laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, and pull through and big rig access. Some of them have restrooms and showers, and full hookups at the individual sites. Your Hiawassee motorhome rental is the perfect compliment to these campgrounds and your comfortable home away from home.

Walnut Hollow Ranch is a working cattle ranch with RV sites. It has recreational trails for hiking that lead to spectacular waterfalls, a camp store for replenishing supplies, access to fishing spots, and more. It is child and pet-friendly and has some tent camping sites.

Cardinal Ridge Farm has RV recreational trails for hiking, a pet area, and gravel roads. It is an adults-only campground, pets are accepted. Many of the individual sites have mountain views, gravel pads with grassy areas, picnic tables, and fire rings. Guests of the campground can enjoy watching the deer feeding at dusk.

Mountain View Campground has a pavilion where social activities are held regularly and some sites have mountain views. Children and pets are accepted; there are some tent camping sites and some of the tenants are seasonal and long term.

Exploring The City

There is so much to do in Hiawassee, that no vacation could possibly be long enough, but tourists visiting the area should start with Lake Chatuge. The resource allows for boating and fishing, and swimming, although swimmers should exercise some caution and avoid areas where fishing is taking place (anglers should also be wary and on the lookout for possible swimmers). Camping and waterskiing can also be enjoyed at or on the lake.

The Hamilton Gardens on Lake Chatuge is an immense botanical garden with dogwood, wildflowers, trillium, rhododendron, and azaleas, which are native to the area. These are among the 3,000 different species of flowers protected here by the state of Georgia; the rhododendrons kept here number in excess of 400 varieties, the largest collection in the state.

Guests should also not deny themselves a visit to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, ground zero for an ongoing schedule of events, spread amongst multiple on-site venues, that last all year and occur regularly. Guests attending events at the fairgrounds can avail themselves of the on-site camping resources and your Hiawassee luxury RV rental would be the perfect way to enjoy the fairgrounds and your home comforts without having to travel far at all.

Winding your way around the mountainous setting can be tiring work, not to mention appetite inducing, and Hiawassee has this covered too. There is a small but distinct variety of cuisines to choose from, liberally spread out between numerous venues that serve large portions of delicious food. Diners can choose from Italian or Mexican food, pub fare or steakhouses, or more. One restaurant serves a killer brisket melt and recommends following it with banana pudding, a southern dish, for dessert. An Asian cafe lists a variety of Eastern dishes (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) on its menu; diners eating here should try the egg drop soup or coconut soup as an appetizer.

Don't forget that your Hiawassee RV trailer rental is also a veritable kitchen on wheels; sometimes the perfect end to a perfect day is a quiet, home-cooked meal. Or, grab some takeout items and bring them back to your RV for a nice meal under a starlit sky. The choice is yours.
