Holden, Maine is just outside the city of Bangor, one of the state’s largest cities and a hub for tourism in the northern part of the state. Holden is within a few hours' drive of some of Maine’s most popular attractions too; Acadia National Park, Mount Baxter State Park (home of Mount Katahdin), and the 100 Mile Wilderness, which acts as the final leg of the Appalachian Trail.

Holden is one of the quieter communities adjacent to Bangor and doesn’t have as many attractions and restaurants as Orono (where the University of Maine is located) and Old Town. This should be considered an advantage when you book an RV in Holden though, as you’ll have easy access to everything the city has to offer, while still being able to enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings that Maine is famous for.

Discover Holden

The Great Outdoors

Maine is an outdoor lover’s paradise with a beautiful coastline, hundreds of miles of pristine forests, and rivers that are just begging for a canoe trip. If you’re looking for some fun that’s close by when you get an RV rental in Holden, check out the Penobscot River Walkway in Bangor. It can easily be done in an hour or two and is right off State Street where many of the more popular restaurants are located; it’s also got some excellent bird watching opportunities.

You can’t go to this part of Maine without visiting Acadia National Park, New England’s only national park. While it is one of the smaller ones, Acadia packs a fair amount of adventure into that small space; you can cycle the carriage roads (the former roadways of the Rockefeller Family before Acadia’s land was gifted to the federal government), hike the treacherous Precipice Trail if you’re not afraid of heights, or just chill in the hip town of Bar Harbor on the edge of the park.

Acadia can get rather crowded during the summer tourist season. Visitors seeking an escape from the crowds can head to the Bold Coast region, near the town of Cutler; it's the perfect place to get some solitude. There’s a hiking trail along the coast that’s only a few miles long and has excellent views of Maine’s rocky cliffs.

RV Parks

Maine is just about every New Englander’s favorite camping destination, so you should have no trouble finding a great place to set up camp with the Holden travel trailer rental. Holden Family Campground is just outside of town and has a heated pool, a playground, laundry facilities, a lending library, and full hookups for your travel rental from Holden. If you’re thinking about spending a lot of time in the Bangor area, this is probably a good spot to consider.

Another nearby option is the Bangor/Holden KOA Holiday to the east of town. As you might expect with a KOA, it’s loaded with amenities including full hookups for your Holden motorhome rental, a dog park, a camp kitchen, and a pool. Additionally, there are tractor rides, a bounce house for kids, and organized activities on the weekends where you can meet fellow travelers.

However, those choosing to visit Acadia and the Mount Desert Island region might prefer something nearer to them, and the Branch Lake Camping Area near Ellsworth fits the bill perfectly. It’s between the park and Holden and has campsites with full hookups, a playground, a dump station, hot showers, and a boat launch on Branch Lake. If you do camp here with the Holden RV rental, be sure to pick up a canoe or kayak rental in Bangor to do some paddling.

Exploring the City

Holden is more of a jumping off point as you explore the beauty of central Maine, so you shouldn’t expect too many big attractions without going into Bangor. Despite being a relatively small city, Bangor has a wealth of excellent dining, with numerous international options. Maine is also at the center of the craft beer revolution, and there are a few breweries worth trying, especially if you enjoy experimental flavors.

If you’re bringing the kids along on this adventure, be sure to visit the Maine Discovery Museum, the largest children’s museum in New England north of Boston. They have several major exhibits and a few smaller rotating ones, all of which are highly interactive and educational. They even have a few adult programs in the evening.

Bangor and the Penobscot River region has long been an industrial powerhouse in New England. Lumberjacks cleared much of the surrounding forestland to build ships and make paper, starting in the Colonial Era. To get a sense of the region’s history, stop by Katahdin Ironworks State Historical Park just outside of Bangor. There’s not too much left of the smelter system that turned raw ore into steel, but there are a few stone structures left to see.
