The town of Honey Grove, Texas is a relatively short drive northeast of the Dallas metropolitan area. Nicknamed “The Sweetest Town in America,” it got its start in the mid-1800s by none other than American folk hero Davy Crockett. Not long before his demise at the Alamo, he is said to have traveled there and found a beautiful grove of trees populated by honeybees and thereby claimed that he would settle near it.

When you book an RV in Honey Grove, you’ll not only have access to the beautiful countryside of northern Texas but also a fascinating glimpse into small-town life where everyone knows their neighbors and life doesn’t look so different from the way it did 50 or even 100 years ago.

Discover Honey Grove

The Great Outdoors

It should come as no surprise that the vast state of Texas has plenty of great places for outdoor recreation. One of the closest places to visit when you have a motorhome rental in Honey Grove is Bonham State Park just outside the town of Bonham. The not-so-creatively named Bonham State Park Lake is at the center of the green space and is popular for swimming and fishing. The area around the lake consists of rolling hills with a few pleasant trails to stroll around.

The Caddo National Grasslands are also only a short drive to the north and are an excellent place for day tripping when you get an RV rental in Honey Grove. The grasslands are centered on Coffee Mill Lake and Lake Crockett, both of which have some great fishing spots and are surrounded by scenic trails. If you have a boat, there are ramps available on both lakes.

A bit farther away is the smaller Lake Fannin that sits just off the Red River and the Texas/Oklahoma border. Again, the main attraction here is fishing, but if you’re not an angler, there is a depression-era cabin perched on its shoreline that’s worth checking out. Trails are fairly limited, but the glassy lake is the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day.

RV Parks

One of the closest places to stay when you rent an RV in North Texas is Sierra RV Park, a little outside the town of Telephone. Sites are equipped with electrical hookups, laundry facilities, horseshoe pits for game night with the family, and a dog park, where your four-legged companions can run free. It’s situated in a beautiful woodland setting, so this is one of the better places to camp if you love outdoor adventure.

Right next door to Sierra RV Park is the Sandy Creek RV Park, which provides electrical hookups for the Honey Grove travel trailer rental, along with laundry facilities and easy access to Bois d’Arc Lake. If you’re looking for a place to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature, Sandy Creek will be one of your best options. Both Sandy Creek and Sierra RV Parks are just outside the Caddo National Grassland too.

For a more off-the-grid camping experience, check out West Lake Davy Crockett Campground inside the Caddo National Grasslands. The campground has drinking water available and a few vault toilets, but otherwise, amenities are limited. However, Lake Crockett also has some beautiful swimming beaches, which are fantastic for cooling off during Texas’s famously hot summers.

Exploring the City

When you get a camper rental in Honey Grove, one of the best places to learn about its history is at the Fannin County Museum of History in downtown Bonham. It’s not very big but has been rated as one of the best small town museums in Texas. Outside is a massive red caboose representing the area’s importance to the frontier railroads that opened up the West for settlement. Inside, you’ll find a city fire engine from 1918, an exhibit honoring the residents lost to World War I, and a display focusing on women’s history in Texas including many home appliances used throughout the past century.

For a look at the indigenous history of North Texas, check out Valley of the Caddo Museum and Cultural Center in the nearby town of Paris. Exhibits change every few months, and many contain precious artifacts on loan from much larger museums in Texas and Oklahoma. As the museum is built into an old rail depot, you also can’t miss the amazing train exhibits here.

No large shopping malls can be found in the Honey Grove area, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some excellent shopping to be found. A couple of the local antique stores are mainstays, and you’re sure to find some really unique items to take home as souvenirs or gifts for friends and family while you’re there. There’s also some great shopping on the first Monday of every month in Bonham, when residents show up for “Trade Days.” All kind of oddities and antiques are on display here, along with beautiful craft projects handmade by the town’s residents.
