Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hot Sulphur Springs takes its name from the springs that populate its western boundary, with most tourists coming for the sole purpose of soaking in its revitalizing waters. Seven natural hot springs flow from deep beneath this alpine paradise, creating dozens of bathing pools that range in temperature from 95-112 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition to relaxing in the heated mineral waters, Hot Sulphur Springs is a popular jumping off point for outdoor adventures in the Colorado Rockies. It’s close to some great alpine skiing in Winter Park and Granby (which makes those hot springs all the more enticing at the end of a hard day). The summer months also offer endless opportunities for recreation in the Arapaho National Forest when you book an RV in Hot Sulphur Springs. Some great hiking trails wind their way through absolutely stunning alpine forests to ascend the nearby peaks too.

The Great Outdoors

The most popular outdoor activity when you choose a motorhome rental in Hot Sulphur Springs is just hanging out in the warm pools of water. However, the town has a lot more to offer when it comes to spending time outside. Byer’s Canyon is only a short distance from town and is a great place for an afternoon of scenic driving. It’s only a couple of miles long, but its close proximity to town makes it well worth the trip. You’ll also be near to Rocky Mountain National Park when you get a camper rental in Hot Sulphur Springs. The eastern edge of the park is easily within day-tripping distance and it’s much less touristic compared to the western side. For a very scenic drive through the park, consider cruising Trail Ridge Road, the highest roadway in the national park system.

Another option is to do a little horseback riding at one of the ranches nearby. Colorado, and the West in general conjure up images of rugged cowboys riding off into the sunset. Why not try being one, even if it’s just for the afternoon?

For something closer to town, check out Pioneer Park straddling the Colorado River on Hot Sulphur Spring’s north end. There’s a disc golf course there along with some great hiking and mountain biking trails. It’s also got some amenity-free campsites available, but know that their proximity to town makes them quite popular.

RV Parks near Hot Sulphur Springs

There are a couple of campgrounds just outside of town including Gilbert Campground and Red Mountain RV Park. Red Mountain has full hookups, Wi-Fi, showers, a dump station, and boat rental available. For a full-service campground when getting an RV rental in Hot Sulphur Springs, this is one of the best and closest. Gilbert Campground, on the other hand, is virtually amenity-free besides a portable toilet, so it’s best to come prepared for self-sufficiency here. It can be a great experience for those that want to enjoy nature without all the distractions that can come with a full-service RV park.

A little farther away are a couple of campgrounds near the shore of Lake Granby. Elk Creek Campground and RV Park sits at the lake’s northern tip and features full hookups, laundry facilities, a dump station, and a playground for the little ones. If you want to rent a boat to use on the lake, a nearby marina has quite a few available.

If you’re only staying a night or two when you rent an RV, consider parking at the Walmart in Frisco, just a short distance away. It won’t have the amenities of some of the more developed parks, but it’s close to both Interstate 70, which can take you into downtown Denver. Prior to setting up at Walmart for the night, be sure to confirm availability with store management.

Exploring the Town of Hot Sulphur Springs

When you get a travel trailer rental in Hot Sulphur Springs, you won't find many major tourist attractions nearby. The town has a few diners and a handful of small shops to browse through, but not too much else. For good eats, you’ll probably want to head down Highway 40 towards Winter Park, where several establishments are located to serve the après ski crowd. Colorado is also home to quite a few craft breweries, with even the smallest towns usually having a least one. Create your own beer tour by plotting out some of the breweries that are within a day’s drive of Hot Sulphur Springs and hit the road for some tasty suds.

One of the few attractions you will find in Hot Sulphur Springs is the Pioneer Village Museum. Some of the best museums are the ones that take a deep dive into the history of a place that not too many people are familiar with, which perfectly describes Pioneer Village. It’s fairly small and covers a wide variety of topics, but all of the exhibits are specific to the Hot Sulphur Springs region, from displays detailing the history of the Ute Indian tribe to the story of how the nearby Moffat Rail Tunnel was constructed.
