After the Texas Revolution ended in 1836, the first settlers arrived in the region that would later become the site of Howe. The Jabez brothers were ranchers and entrepreneur. They had heard that when railroads laid down tracks near settlements, these settlements tended to grow rapidly. To entice the Houston and Texas Central Railway to route through Howe, they offered portions of their land to the company. The railroad established a rail switch and a depot on a hilltop, which was nicknamed the Summit because it was the highest point in between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico. Indeed, once the depot was built, a small settlement sprang up around it, and the Jabez brothers profited from selling plots of land to these new residents. When the post office was established, which often marks the founding date of a town, in 1876, the residents named it “Howe” after a prominent railroad employee.

Today, Howe is best known for its annual Founders Day, which is usually held in early May. Vendors, residents, and neighboring towns residents flock to this celebration, and the event is capped off with a pro rodeo competition.

The closest large town is Sherman, about 10 miles north. The central location between Dallas and several wilderness parks and lakes makes Howe an excellent place to rent an RV in.

The Great Outdoors

There’s nothing better than waking up to birdsong and the sound of water lapping at the shoreline, which isn’t feasible in a hotel. Travel trailer rentals in Howe, TX, can make that fantasy a reality. Though northern Texas is mostly agricultural, there are several large lakes and parks at which one can get in touch with their inner wild self. The Lake Texoma on the Texas-Oklahoma border is one of the largest reservoirs in the country. Due to a unique geological quirk, Red River, which feeds the lake, is a saltwater tributary. As a result, Lake Texoma is the only land-locked source of striped bass, a saltwater fish. The freshwater tributaries feeding the lake also supports a population of freshwater fish like largemouth bass, three types of catfish, and carp. Of course, other water recreational activities are enjoyed by many, including jetskiing, sailing, and hiking. The cross-timber Texoma hiking trail, roughly 10 miles long, follows the Texas side of the lake’s perimeter. This trail, and several others are dog-friendly. Hikers are cautioned to watch for snakes like cottonmouth and rattlesnakes. Bring your Howe camper rental here as there are several public and private campgrounds in the area.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is a protected stretch of territory that abuts Lake Texoma. This habitat is home to a few hundred species of birds and mammals, some of which are endangered, like the Monarch Butterfly, Piping Plover, Whooping Crane, and Interior Least Tern. Unlike many Wildlife Refuges, this has a few miles of established hiking trails on which hikers may observe many avians and wildlife in their natural habitat. Photographers and nature lovers will appreciate seeing these exceedingly rare creatures, which could be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

RV Parks

When you search for an RV in Howe, TX, be sure to figure out where you’ll park while you embark on your adventure. There are hundreds of campgrounds and RV resorts for you to choose from in the area, all with different amenities and service.

Big Mineral Camp bills itself as a full-service resort, marina, and campground all in one. In addition to the usual features like hookups, they also offer boat rentals (pontoons and ski boats) and a fantastic view of the lakefront.

Alternatively, Mill Creek Marina and Resort in Cambridge, TX, may be a good option. Some RV lots have waterfront views, and all sites include a fire pit and a charcoal grill.

Exploring the City

In Texas, everything is bigger. Homes are bigger. Lakes are bigger. And so is the driving time to anywhere. A Howe motorhome rental makes driving to and from the local attractions much more convenient and comfortable.

One thing Texas is known for is its giant, open blue sky. Flip your perspective, hit the wild blue yonder, and get an aerial view of earth from high above. Skydive Spaceland-Dallas in Whitewright is run by an experienced family of skydivers. The Dallas facility is also home to both professional and amateur diving teams, and interested spectators are encouraged to watch their aerial ballet performances from the viewing deck.

Switch from a Howe RV rental to a bulldozer for the day and play in a giant sandbox. An amusement park strictly for adults, the Extreme Sandbox in Pottsboro teaches people how to use heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers, and frontloaders. Drivers also have the option of competing to see who can dig the biggest hole, dueling, or crushing a car.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventure, hit a vintage malt shop. One of the few original drive-in restaurants still in business today, the retro Anna restaurant dishes up familiar diner fare like burgers and chili cheese dogs. Spurlock’s Malt Shop is known for its specialty desserts: malts and “sweet snow,” a twist on shaved ice. Be prepared to wait. On a hot summer night, particularly on the weekends, lines wrap around the exterior.

There’s nothing better than wrapping up the perfect Texas adventure with a delicious malt drink outside a Howe RV rental on a warm evening as you are making new memories!
