Ider, Alabama, is a town located in the northeastern corner of the state in DeKalb County. The town was first incorporated in 1973. It is located about one hour away from Huntsville and around 45 minutes from Chattanooga, TN. The town is a roughly a two-hour drive from both Atlanta, GA, and Birmingham. The city is located at an ideal intersection for someone those wishing to see several states on their outdoor excursion. Ider could be the starting point of a great journey across the South.

Ider is located on top of Sand Mountain, a sandstone plateau at the foot of the Appalachian Mountain range. The geography immediately around the town is fairly flat because it is atop the plateau, but it quickly turns hilly as you drive around the foothills. Because of its elevation, 1,500 feet above sea level, it is a little bit cooler than the rest of Alabama. That far in the southeastern United States, it’s still gets very warm, though.

The Great Outdoors

Many of the attractions in and around the town are based on the beautiful nature. With parks, saddleries, farms, campgrounds, and creeks, there is something for everyone to enjoy during the outing. Book an RV and venture down to Ider Town Park where there are walking trails that are mostly paved awaiting your arrival. Tennis courts, a baseball field, a playground, and a picnic area are also available. The town of Ider also features two parades each year, a homecoming parade and a Christmas parade. The local school marching band and dance team often march in the parade, as well as local civic organizations. That left behind ghost towns such as Battelle, Bootsville, and Rawlinsville. These old towns were once integral to DeKalb County and remain interesting parts of its history.

Little River Canyon National Preserve is an encapsulation of much of the beauty of Ider and the surrounding county. Located atop Lookout Mountain, the preserve is about 30 minutes outside of the city. It features opportunities for fishing and hunting with the proper licenses. One may also camp, eat at a local restaurant, and hike through the beautifully preserved nature.

Wills Creek RV Park is right off of Interstate 59, a major interstate through Alabama. The park provides sewer, water, and electric. It has WiFi as well. The sites are pull-through, and there is enough space for some big rigs.

Sequoyah Caverns and Ellis Homestead in Valley Head is the park closest to Ider. Offering 50 amp electric hookups, as well as sewer and water, the campground also has WiFi. It is located next to caverns that you may explore with a guide. Playgrounds and a dog park are also onsite.

Buck’s Pocket State Park is a small state park in Grove Oak. As with Ider, Grove Oak is located atop Sand Mountain. The state park campgrounds offer water, sewer, and electric for your RV. They have pull-through sites, with some of the sites being located along the waterfront.

Should you be passing through and need a quick overnight stop, consider Walmart. There is a Walmart located less than 30 minutes away in Fort Payne, and overnight camping may be allowed there. Just be sure to hop in and speak with a manager before settling down.

Exploring The City

The area around Ider is full of exciting things to see and do on your outdoor family adventure to northeast Alabama. Fort Payne Depot Museum is built from an old train depot that was built in 1891. The depot serviced passengers until 1970 and freight until 1983. It’s been a museum since 1986. History enthusiasts will enjoy stopping at this museum. The Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center is a convention center devoted to the agricultural industry. Located in Rainsville, offers different events throughout the year. The DeKalb Welcome Center in Valley Head offers standard rest stop offerings, with vending machines, places to rest and picnic, along with information about the county as a whole.
