If Indialantic sounds like a combination of Indian and Atlantic, it's because it is. On Florida's east coast, between the Indian River lagoon and the wide-open Atlantic Ocean to the east, Indialantic-by-the-Sea, as it's formally known, sits on a barrier island less than a 15-minute drive from Palm Bay. It's a town about a mile wide and a mile long, and what it lacks in size it more than makes up for the recreation and outdoor adventures found nearby.

Indialantic started as a resort of some kind, with a hotel built here in the 1920s followed by a casino and a beach club a few years later. A causeway connects it to the mainland at Melbourne, allowing for an easy 90-minute drive to Orlando. Book an Indialantic RV rental by owner and you’ll be close to the visitor attractions of the Space Coast and the natural wonders of the Canaveral National Seashore. Search for an RV in Indialantic today and prepare to be amazed.

A Space Coast Oddysey

Running close to the ocean, A1A is the major route to take to get to Playalinda Beach in the Canaveral National Seashore. A1A is a designated American byway and one of the most scenic routes in Florida, a mostly two-lane roadway that allows you to glimpse not just seaside luxury spots and golf courses but also magnificent beaches, nature trails, and historic sites.

Arriving at the Canaveral National Seashore after an hour's drive in your camper rental from Indialantic, you will be greeted by peace and quiet amidst nature in its mostly untouched state. Playalinda Beach is one of the more accessible beaches, especially if you want to feel the rumble beneath your feet as a live rocket launches. Stay here for a night to gaze at the Milky Way, or time your visit to witness turtles lay eggs.

With an ocean on one side and a river on the other, saltwater and freshwater fishing is a popular activity to look forward to on the Space Coast. Take your travel trailer rental from Indialantic to Port Canaveral if you want to join a fishing tour or go out dolphin-viewing. Take a cruise and watch out for manatees as you float on the Indian and Banana Rivers. Or rent a boat and launch from one of the many public boat ramps for a wonderful time on the water at your own pace.

Heading south, you'll encounter several state parks on the 25-mile barrier island. Farthest south is Sebastian Inlet State Park where you can stroll on pristine shores (look out for sea turtles nesting on the beach), fish from the pier, or if you have the energy, ride the waves. If you want to get to the water for a gentler workout, kayak the calm and wild waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Sites for an Indialantic camper rental are available in the park's campground so you can stay much longer and experience the park more intimately.

RV Parks

Indialantic has no RV parks within its limits but you'll find the closest in Melbourne Beach (on the barrier island) 10 minutes away and several in Melbourne in the mainland. Rent a motorhome in Indialantic and consider staying at the huge Outdoor Resorts in Melbourne Beach as it’s one of the closest. Full hookup sites, showers, and hot tubs are some of the resort’s amenities that could help make for a comfortable stay. Being close to water, the resort also makes it easy for you to enjoy surfing, fishing, and scuba diving, among the many activities popular here.

In Melbourne, less than 10 miles from across the causeway, many campgrounds also offer full hookup sites, showers, and restrooms. While located on the same barrier island, RV parks and campgrounds near Cape Canaveral and in Sebastian Inlet are farther out (20+ miles), although they make a great base if you want to stay oceanside. Walmart parking lots also make convenient places to stop overnight if you can secure approval from the store manager. One of the closest Walmart stores is in Melbourne, just across the causeway.

Gas stations in Indialantic are scarce but not if you drive up or down A1A, especially in Melbourne Beach and Satellite Beach. Cross into the mainland and you'll find several gas stations in Melbourne and Palm Bay.

Brevard County and the Barrier Island

Step inside the Liberty Bell Memorial Museum in Melbourne for a look at the conflicts the United States has been involved in. Examine presidential memorabilia, military uniforms from different eras, and an assortment of weaponry. A former water tower, the museum also houses a replica of the historic Liberty Bell. Ask a docent if you can ring the bell.

Time your visit in June and July to join a "turtle walk" conducted by Brevard County’s Sea Turtle Preservation Society. Get inside STPS’ learning room and find out more about turtles and how you can help STPS protect them. For more interactive displays and exhibits, visit their larger facility on the barrier island.

The Turkey Creek Sanctuary in Palm Bay is a lush nature center where you'll likely encounter manatees, turtles, and plenty of birdlife, either from the boardwalk or kayak. You might also spot gar (long-beaked fish), blue crabs, and water snakes. Staff members are around to answer questions so your visit can be both relaxing and educational.

Indialantic and the adjacent beach communities offer a wide-ranging menu of seafood whether you want shells and crustaceans like scallops, lobsters, and crabs or same-day caught fish. Grouper, tuna, and salmon are easy to find. If you're hankering for a late-night sandwich, pizza, or burger, you won't be disappointed. Vegan and gluten-free options are also easy to order.

Indialantic’s tiny size doesn’t matter as much as where it is located. With nature all around it and city comforts not far away, an RV rental in Indialantic, Florida is perfectly placed to take full advantage of the small town’s location. Just add water and you’re all set.
