Indian Lake lies in the heart of New York’s Adirondack Mountains. Situated just minutes from Highway 28, that runs between Lake George and Tupper Lake, Indian Lake is accessible for anyone embarking on a road trip through the North County region with an RV rental.

The lake is named after Indian Lake, a small community established in 1858. Tucked away in the mountains, the community has retained a relatively simple way of life, refusing to give in to modern services such as traffic lights.

With the larger towns of Albany and Syracuse are just over a two-hour drive away, Indian Lake provides the perfect mountainside escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Book an RV in Hamilton County today for a unique motorhome camping experience in one of the most picturesque regions of New York!

Discover Indian Lake

Getting Outdoors

With a backdrop of spectacular mountains and beautifully tranquil waters to explore, boating on Indian Lake’s waters is a truly magical experience. The lake’s long and thin profile lends itself to many hidden coves and bays that are best explored by kayak or canoe. For those RV camping with their own boat in tow, head to the public boat launch ramp that can be found on the lake’s southern shores. The marina here also rents out kayaks, canoes and motorized vessels for those that don’t have their own equipment.

Camping at Indian Lake is also popular among anglers, who come to fish for the lake’s diverse species. Launch your boat onto the water and head to the northern portion of Indian Lake to fish for the likes of trout and whitefish. Find a secluded spot on the southern shoreline or one of the lake’s small islands to try your luck at catching the trophy-sized northern pike. Rent a camper at Indian Lake during the winter, when the crowds are fewer, and ice fishing for brown trout is rewarding!

For those that would rather admire Indian Lake from a distance, there are a plethora of walking trails in the area. One of the best views over Indian Lake can be seen from the top of Watch Hill. The short hike is great for any ability level as well as being suitable for families with small children. This well-marked path follows an old wood-logging trail before climbing up some steeper rocks before eventually leveling out to a ridgeline where walkers can enjoy a spectacular view over the Snowy Mountain and Indian Lake.

Camping at Indian Lake

Although RV camping at Indian Lake is possible, the majority of the campsites are situated on the lake’s southern islands and therefore are only accessible by boat.

Situated at the lake’s northern end, Thornbush Acres RV Park is one of the most RV friendly campsites in the area. Open seasonally, from May through to October; campers can enjoy large pull-thru sites with full hookups and free, site-wide WiFi. Those without a self-contained unit can also make use of the well-maintained washrooms on-site, complete with hot showers and flushing toilets. Additionally, there is a convenient camp store on-site where travelers can pick up fishing tackle, firewood, and other useful supplies.

Head out to Interstate Route 87, where a huge selection of campsites can be found. Consider staying at the Country Haven Campground, a pet-friendly campsite nestled under a canopy of trees. With over 145 sites to choose from, RV users have the choice of fully or partially serviced sites, all of which come with their own fire ring and picnic table. The campground also provides luxury amenities such as a heated swimming pool, basketball court and even an on sight trout stream to fish from!

Exploring the Area

Your Indian Lake camper rental will serve you well on your adventures as you set out to explore the surrounding area. Cruise up to Blue Mountain Lake in your rental RV, where you will find the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. Established in 1967, this multi-disciplinary arts center organizes art exhibitions, workshops, and classes making art accessible for all. Adults and children alike can spend an afternoon painting, sculpting pottery or carving woodwork in one of the workshops, or spend an evening enjoying a musical concert or theatrical performance in the woods.

Just down the road is the Adirondack Museum, which encompasses over 120 acres of both indoor and outdoor exhibition space. All of the exhibitions offer visitors the chance to learn a little bit more about the history of the 6-million acre Adirondack Park. Whether you enjoy learning about history through well-curated exhibitions, educational workshops, or hands-on activities, it is all possible at the Adirondack Museum.

For a touch of local history, visit The Indian Lake Museum, located in the town of Indian Lake. Housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings, The Indian Lake Museum boasts a small selection of permanent displays showcasing the fascinating history of the area. Discover original farm tools from the 18th century, the earliest photographs taken in the area and a multitude of other historical artifacts. Do make sure to call ahead before you visit, as the museum does not operate to conventional opening times.
