Jonesboro is an unincorporated community in Coryell and Hamilton Counties in the state of Texas, but it should not be confused with Jonesboro (or Jonesborough) in Red River County, Texas. The town began with the construction of a steam sawmill and gristmill on the Leon River in 1866. Several families moved to the area after the Civil War had ended and the community became known as Jones Mill (after the brothers who built the mills). The community changed its name to Jonesboro in 1877, and it continued to grow into the mid-1880s and 1890s. The construction of a railroad in 1911 that bypassed Jonesboro led to a decrease in the town's population; the construction of Highway 36 in the 1930s boosted the town's economy but not its population.

Book an RV in Coryell County, and you are one step closer to a memorable Texas-style vacation experience. Hico was originally 2.5 miles away from its current location; the construction of a nearby railroad resulted in the town's residents moving closer to the train stop. Gatesville was established shortly after the creation of Coryell County and was named after the nearby Fort Gates. Temple is unique compared to similar nearby small towns due to its arts and retail amenities. Comanche is the location of the "Old Cora Courthouse;" it is situated near the modern courthouse and is one of the oldest wooden courthouses in Texas still in existence. Your Jonesboro travel trailer rental can provide access to this historic area.

The Great Outdoors

Cedar Creek Islands Wildlife Management Area is situated on three islands in the Cedar Creek Reservoir in Henderson County. Visitors can enjoy fishing in the reservoir waters and viewing the wildlife from the water (the islands are restricted to wildlife only). Visitors can expect to see egrets, herons, and cormorants amongst other bird species; photography is another popular activity within the WMA and camping is permitted at Purtis Creek and Fairfield Lake State Parks.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a nature preserve dedicated to the protection of rare and at-risk animal species, scientific research, natural resource management, and public education. It also trains professionals engaged in the profession. Park staff offer two kinds of education: workshops that blend instruction with guided tours; and camps lasting partial or full days, or overnight. Keep your Jonesboro camper rental nearby, and you can retire to the lap of luxury between or after your adventures have concluded.

Sowell Creek Park is a popular destination for anglers who can fish on the lake or from the shoreline for bass, crappie, and catfish. There are several boat ramps and a few fishing docks. The park also has miles of trails leading to High Point Park where guests can hike or go horseback riding. There are also areas where guests can picnic, and several beaches where swimming is allowed.

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds near Jonesboro. Your Jonesboro RV rental is all you will need to make yourself at home while vacationing in Coryell County.

Tres Rios RV Resort is a family-friendly RV campground where guests can swim in the three rivers that converge near the resort, participate in community cleanups of the rivers and riverbanks, or join in any of the numerous social activities the park sponsors. The park has a playground and walking trails, and opportunities to go fishing or fossil hunting. Individual sites have full hookups and pull-through access.

Exploring The City

There are plenty of things to do in Jonesboro and the surrounding area. There is an old mill where visitors can enjoy the scenery and learn about the history and culture of the area; the mill can also be used for weddings or other social functions such as family events. One local museum documents and explains the Texas oil industry, and there are unique retail outlets such as a pottery store, a full-service quilt shop, and a gift shop emphasizing watermelon-themed items in celebration of Jonesboro's agricultural roots. While you are in Jonesboro, take your Jonesboro motorhome rental for a spin around the local highways; riding an RV and looking down on the surrounding traffic and out towards where the road is taking you is a unique experience not to be missed.

When the dinner bell rings, Coryell County has you covered. One bar and grill is located in an old building that may have been a feed store in the past; decor is simple, not fancy, but the atmosphere is comfortable. Diners stopping here should add a side of jalapeno cheddar poppers to their hamburger or cheeseburger, and wash it down with a cold one. One gastropub wine bar has excellent ambiance to match a seasonal menu and a variety of wines and craft beers. The dining room is small but has high ceilings and plenty of space between tables. Portions are large, so you will probably wind up taking your leftovers home to your Jonesboro luxury RV rental for a midnight snack, but that, after all, is what vacations are all about.
