Founded in 1840’s the picturesque town of Kalama, Washington is located on the banks of the Colombia River, just a short distance from Longview to the north and Woodland to the south. The bustling city of Portland, Oregon is just a 40-minute drive away, and there is plenty to do in the town and the surrounding area.

One of Kalama’s claims to fame is the fact that it is the home to the world’s tallest, single tree totem pole, which can be found in the Louis Rasmussen Day Park in the center of town. For movie fans, the Kalama High School was the featured location for the filming of many scenes of the popular ‘Twilight’ movies.

Although over the past 10 years the town has grown in size considerably, it still retains much of its small-town values and community spirit, making it a great town to visit book an RV in Cowlitz County, and visit the great outdoors.

Great Outdoors

Set on the banks of the Columbia River you will find Louis Rasmussen Day Park, which makes up the heart of town. It is a great place to go to simply kick back and relax, and watch the sunset of an evening. The walking path is good for jogging or cycling, and sports enthusiasts can make use of the volleyball and tennis courts. There is a playground for the children and access to the sandy beach. The park is also home to a set of totem poles and offers plenty of parking for your RV rental.

A luxury RV rental from Kalama will give you access to many parks. Just north of town, following the Colombia River, is the Trojan Site and Prescott Beach County Park, a former nuclear power plant site. This park is perfect for a spot of bird watching or kayaking in the river. Access to the park is easy thanks to the extensive parking facilities, with lots of shoreline access for fishing don't forget to grab your pole. For a more unique activity, you could try your hand at disc golf.

Just an hour east is Mount St. Helens National Monument, where one of the most popular activities is hiking the volcano to see the incredible views from the summit.

Kalama RV Park is the largest campground on the Kalama River, with full-service and family-friendly camping all year round. There is a cafe that serves both breakfast and lunch and a small bar that serves a range of drinks. Shuffleboard, darts and big screen TV's are provided for recreational activities. Amenities also include a modern restrooms, laundry facilities, two playgrounds, and a general store. This would make an excellent spot to park your camper rental from Kalama.

Heading south down the river you’ll find quite a few more RV parks, including Columbia Riverfront RV Park, which comes with the added benefit of having 800+ feet of sandy beaches and a private outdoor pool. The camp offers 76 full-service sites, 65 of which have 50/30/20 Amp service and 10 have 30/20 Amp. All sites come with sever connections, water, cable TV, and WiFi is available throughout the park.

Other parks this side of town include Stevens Moorage RV Camp Park, Lewis River RV Park, Oaks Mobile and RV Park and Woodland Mobile Home and RV Park. With so many places to stay, you should have no issue in locating a great spot for your Kalama camper rental.

If your road trip is taking you north, then Brookhollow RV Park may be a good option, as it is only a mile away from Interstate 5. The park as a range of helpful amenities such as concrete pad sites, laundry facilities, showers, a fitness room, and WiFi. Daily and weekly reservations are available, so is a good option for a quick stop on your journey exploring Washington.

If you are looking just for a quick overnight stay, then you could consider something as simple as a Walmart parking lot, just obtain manager permission before parking for the night.

Exploring the City

A popular activity in town is visiting both the Kalama Falls and Fallert Creek Salmon Fish Hatcheries, which are located along the Kalama River and Columbia River. Hatcheries make up a big part of the town’s history, as in 1895 the first fish hatchery in Washington State was formed in the town.

With a vibrant community spirit, Kalama hosts a number of events throughout the year. Every July, the town enjoys the annual Kalama Fair, which boasts a huge parade, complete with Fair Princesses, Queen Coronation, and a number of other activities. In August, car enthusiasts and families can enjoy the Untouchables Car show, where over 300 classic cars descend on the town. At Christmas, the town comes alive with events including the Festival of Lighted Boats and the tree lighting ceremony in Toteff Park. Rent an RV in Kalama and enjoy all of them!
