Keokuk is one of two county seats in Lee County, Iowa, and the state's southernmost city. It is named after the chief of the Sauk tribe who is presumed to have been buried somewhere in Rand Park. The area around the city was first settled around 1820 by an army surgeon, Dr. Samuel C. Muir, who had been ordered to abandon his Indian wife but chose to resign instead. By 1827, more Europeans had settled in the area; a trading company set up a post and several houses for its workers. This area came to be known as “the Rat Row.” Steamboat traffic on the Mississippi River continued to increase, allowing the village to grow. It was incorporated in December 1847. Keokuk has a strong association with baseball going back as far as 1875 and has been home to affiliate teams for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, and a few other teams.

RV rentals in Lee County are your best source for the RV make and model that best suits your vacation needs. While you are here, expand your experience by visiting some other nearby communities. Fort Madison is home to an Amtrak station stop and the last remaining double swing-span bridge on the Mississippi River; the bridge has separate levels for cars (the upper level) and trains (the lower level). Kahoka, Missouri, is one of the stops on the Avenue of the Saints, a roadway that connects St. Louis, Missouri and St. Paul, Minnesota. Carthage, Illinois, is connected to Abraham Lincoln for two reasons: first, he was the lawyer who represented the only man ever hung in Hancock County, Illinois; second, he made a speech in Carthage during his senate campaign in 1858. Your Keokuk travel trailer rental is how you will experience this area in comfort.

The Great Outdoors

Blackhawk Bottoms is a government project dedicated to restoring the natural river floodplain environment that has been stripped by previous usage. The goal is to provide food and shelter for the resident mammal population and migratory bird species that follow the Mississippi River in the spring and fall. It is an ideal destination for visitors who enjoy bird and nature watching and photography; guests will have an opportunity to view the interconnected habitats such as forests, backwaters, deep-water wetlands, wet meadow prairies, and mesic prairies that make up this area.

Shimek State Forest is a semi-cultivated outdoor recreation area that provides public access to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails, wildflower and wildlife viewing, and much more. Guests are welcome to fish from a dock, enjoy primitive camping, or take a scenic drive to view the park's environment. Park your Keokuk camper rental nearby, and you can combine rugged outdoor adventure with the creature comforts of home, enjoying the best of both worlds.

Geode State Park is a popular destination for swimming and camping, and there are hiking trails around the park lake and as far as the dam. Camping sites vary in amenities; some have electrical outlets, while others are primitive. Boating and fishing on the lake are allowed, and there is a plentiful supply of largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and other fish species that can be caught. Rock hounds come to the park looking for the namesake geodes, but park policy is “look but don't touch” (removing minerals and other natural items from the park is not allowed, with the exception of mushrooms, nuts, fruits, and berries).

RV Parks

There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds near Keokuk, and some of them may have mobile homes or long-term visitors. Your Keokuk RV rental is your guarantee of a relaxing and enjoyable visit no matter where you decide to stay.

Hickory Haven Campground is a rustic RV park that has been in operation since 1993 and is nestled among the trees, allowing for some light but also offering a reasonable amount of shade during the day. Sites can be rented by the day, week, or month and include full hookups, picnic tables, firewood, and more. The park has restrooms, laundry facilities, and disposal stations, plus a playground and covered pavilion. There are walking trails nearby, and the park is big rig friendly. Some sites may have tent camping.

Exploring The City

Visitors coming to Keokuk for the first time should begin their stay by checking out a riverboat museum. Guests are taken on a guided tour of the museum, then left to explore as they wish. The boat has many exhibits demonstrating how difficult life was, how the riverboats functioned and were operated, and more. There is a bridge observation deck with picnic tables where guests can view the lock and dam and any boat traffic heading up or down the river; and, of course, there are the reservoir and the lock itself. History buffs will want to check out the national cemetery, which dates back as far as the Civil War but has grave markers for veterans of WWII, the Korean War, and others. Don't forget to take your Keokuk motorhome rental for a ride around the local countryside. Driving an RV is one of the benefits of an RV vacation, something you can't do with a hotel room.

There is a good selection of restaurants in Keokuk, and most are reasonably priced. One Italian restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and has a very refined atmosphere. The menu has pizza, mainstream Italian fare, and vegetarian-friendly items, and the portions are huge. Guests dining here should try the seafood risotto; takeout is also available, allowing guests to head back to their Keokuk luxury RV rental to enjoy their meal under an open, starry sky.
