It's not exactly clear how the town of Kill Devil Hills got its unique name. This small village on the Outer Banks barrier islands of North Carolina is said to be named for a homemade rum called “Kill Devil Rum” due to its strength and potency, but others dispute this claim. What we do know about Kill Devil Hills is that from a historical standpoint, it is one of the more fascinating places you could imagine. At one point in time, it was nothing more than a small indigenous fishing encampment, and it was not until well after it was officially established that the town began its ascent to becoming one of the state’s and region’s most famous vacation destinations.

Kill Devil Hills is known for being home to the very first controlled, powered airplane flights back in 1903 when the Wright brothers chose the seaside hamlet for its fantastic winds and towering sand dunes. The beaches that line the Outer Banks attract huge crowds each summer, with incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean, and powerful waves that make for some of the Eastern seaboard’s best surfing. When you book an RV in Kill Devil Hills, you are bound to have the time of your life. There is so much to do, see, and explore, including many of the great towns that border Kill Devil Hills like Nags Head and Kitty Hawk.

The Great Outdoors

The fabled Outer Banks region is legendary for its vast, wide open stretches of white sand beaches, but there are also some amazing forests and parks near town. Jockey’s Ridge State Park is found in Nags Head, the next village to the south, a truly magnificent place to bring your Kill Devil Hills RV rental. This popular park is one of the most visited in the entire state, known for its massive sand dunes that stand tall above both the ocean and the surrounding town. The protected dunes are a vital part of the coastal ecosystem, holding an impressive variety of wildlife in all shapes and sizes. You can even visit the park’s museum for up-to-date information about the natural environment of the Outer Banks.

Even farther south, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of the several refuges, conservation areas, and other parks used to protect and preserve invaluable grasslands, marshes, swamps, coastal tributaries, and other habitats hosting endangered plants and animals. Hundreds of species of migratory birds call Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge home throughout the year, as it is a much needed and desirable stopping point for them along their yearly migration treks. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will especially appreciate this conservation area when they rent an RV and drive to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.

If you keep heading south in your Kill Devil Hills motorhome rental, you will reach Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This impressive stretch of land covers over 70 miles of pristine, undeveloped coastline. Cape Hatteras is known for its treacherous waters, often labeled the
“Graveyard of the Atlantic” for its countless shipwrecks. You can learn about these lost ships in the park’s visitor centers, stroll down the tranquil beaches, or take tours of the lighthouses that have kept sailors from wrecking off the coast for centuries.

If you feel like getting out of the Outer Banks, Croatan National Forest is a mesmerizing collection of dense, deciduous forests and wetlands that you can visit with your Kill Devil Hills camper rental. You can reach the forest by heading south towards Jacksonville and Wilmington. Guests of the park love mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hunting, camping, and adventuring through the woods on clearly marked nature trails.

City Sightseeing

Kill Devil Hills is an exciting place to vacation, yet for most of the year, the population is quite small, with only a core group of people making up the community. In the summertime, a large influx of people pours into town, and naturally, to entertain them, there is a variety of bars, seafood restaurants, art galleries, cinemas, mini golf courses, regular golf courses, and other assorted activities. Avalon Fishing Pier is somewhat of a landmark, easily noticeable when walking along the beach in Kill Devil Hills. You can test your angling skills from this awesome structure and catch huge fish from the Atlantic, or play some arcade games while eating some tasty food.

Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden is another fantastic resource for learning and observing beauty. This small garden has an assortment of stunning flowers and plants that are native to the region and is located right in the center of town. The state-run arboretum and garden have charming brick pathways to stroll on, winding through sand dunes and other natural features. There are songbirds and butterflies busy at work singing and pollinating in this inviting space, guaranteed to help you feel relaxed and happy.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is by far the most visited feature in both the town and the Outer Banks, known for being the place where Orville and Wilbur Wright first succeeded in flying a powered flying vehicle for the first time in human history. You can learn why they chose the dunes of Kill Devil Hills for their first flight, how many designs they had before achieving success, and everything about the patent wars they had to wage to protect their historic invention that would change the course of human history forever. The museum and dunes are an exciting way to spend the day while learning new things.
