In southern Alaska on Kodiak Island, you can visit the lovely port city of Kodiak for your next vacation. Kodiak is the largest city on the island and the main transportation hub for getting on and off the island too.

The Kodiak Islands have long been home to the Alutiiq people, dating back several thousand years. After Russian explorers like Stephan Glotov reached the shores of Kodiak, they named the island and claimed it for their country. Kodiak was even chosen to be the capital of Russian Alaska before it was eventually moved to Sitka. When Alaska was sold to the United States in 1867, the town was transformed into a commercial fishing hub.

Kodiak is still around and thriving on magnificent Kodiak Island, and when you rent an RV there, you can circle the island seeing the most exceptional sights imaginable. State parks on the island, national parks over on the mainland, and even the cities of Homer and Anchorage are within reach when you book an RV in Kodiak and have a dream vacation in the northernmost state in the USA.

Discover Kodiak

The Great Outdoors

Few states feel more remote, wilder, or more magical than scenic Alaska, and with your Kodiak camper rental, you will be able to explore the farthest reaches of the state even beyond the limits of Kodiak Island itself. Before you set your sights for the mainland, there are some stunning things to see on Kodiak Island like Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park in the northern section of town. There is a historical fort on-site named after famed explorer William R. Abercrombie, as well as a campground that is tricky to reach with your Kodiak camper rental, but possible all the same. There are hiking trails, picnic spots, and a historical museum in the small park too.

Shuyak Island State Park is two islands north of Kodiak Island in the archipelago, and although you cannot drive there or bring your Kodiak motorhome rental, you can reach the remote island by boat or plane. The island is teeming with towering Sitka spruce, along with pristine coastlines and glorious waterways. There are four cabins you can rent if the island calls you to stay for a few days.

Experience the stunning island views while taking advantage of the mobility that your Kodiak campervan rental provides by taking a scenic drive south along Chiniak Highway along the island's eastern coast. Sky and ocean meet for miles along this rugged coastline. Spend an afternoon exploring the rocky beaches of Chiniak or capture some otherworldly images of the shores and the open sea.

RV Parks

Finding a place to camp overnight on Kodiak Island can be tricky, but there are a few options available. Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park is one place worth looking into, with a rustic campground you can call your temporary home while you explore the forest by the sea.

Pasagshak State Recreation Site is another campground you can make good use of when you need a place to stay in your Kodiak motorhome rental. Unsurprisingly, there are stunning landscapes and views of the sun rising in the morning over the ocean.

City Sightseeing

Remote and small are not two particularly inspiring characteristics for a vacation destination, yet Kodiak and the island on which it sits seem to defy all expectations. This amazing port city has lots of fun things to do when you rent an RV on the island, like Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park. Aside from its precious natural beauty, the state park is home to Kodiak Alaska Military History Museum, housed in old bunkers and military installations used to defend the island against Japanese attacks during the Second World War. There are lots of neat relics of the past found in the museum, from old military weapons and equipment to uniforms and large vehicles which are used in annual parades through town.

Another wonderful museum in town is the Alutiiq Museum, which covers the fascinating history of the people who called the island home for thousands of years. This native-run museum preserves the culture of these stoic people, capturing the essence of their heritage and culture with brilliant artifacts and amazing artistic expositions created by native artists.

The Kodiak Laboratory Aquarium & Touch Tank is perfect for learning about the local marine life. This aquarium is much smaller than large city aquariums but just as potent and full of knowledge. There is a touch tank for small children to experience while they discover the mysteries of the underwater world, and there is even a gift shop for souvenirs too.
