La Center, Washington is a relatively small community just a short distance from where the Lewis River meets the mighty Columbia River; only a short drive up Interstate 5 separates it from the cultural capital of the region, Portland. The town was a major river transportation hub in its heyday and was where steamboats would offload their cargo to smaller boats as the Columbia River became shallower in late summer. When railways came to Pacific Northwest in the latter half of the 19th century, the town lost much of its importance and population.

Today you’ll find that when you book an RV in La Center, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the area’s rich history, but it’s also conveniently located near tons of amazing outdoor attractions and is within easy driving distance of a major metropolitan city.

Discover La Center

The Great Outdoors

Paradise Point State Park is just outside of town, near the confluence of the East Fork of the Lewis River and the main channel of the Lewis. There are a few miles of hiking trails through the wooded area surrounding the river along with a sandy beach that’s perfect for swimming and lounging. A small disc golf course near the end of the park makes it a popular destination with families too.

When you choose a camper rental in La Center, you’ll also have relatively easy access to Mount Rainier National Park. The most visible peak from the Seattle metro is a hiker’s paradise with dozens of trails encircling the mountain. While climbing to its summit is probably out of the question for all but the most experienced mountaineers, there are tons of lookouts on its outskirts with fantastic views of the mountain.

The Columbia River Gorge is only a short drive to the southeast when you rent an RV here and is one of the best places for watersports activities. Swimming, kayaking, and even parasailing are available here amongst the 4,000-foot-high rock walls of the gorge. If you’re looking for adventure when you get an RV rental in La Center, Washington, you’ll find few places as breathtaking as the gorge.

RV Parks

La Center’s location near both the Columbia River Gorge and the Cascade Range makes it a popular vacation destination for RV tourists and there are a number of parks nearby to accommodate visitors. Tri-Mountain RV Park is just a little south of town and offers full hookups, showers, and laundry facilities. Being right off Interstate 5, it’s very convenient if you’re thinking about making trips down to Portland.

Also close to town is the Pekin Ferry RV Park, which offers a more rustic camping experience for your travel trailer rental from La Center. There’s a nine-hole disc golf course in the park, and many of their sites have water and electrical hookups. The park also has an excellent swimming hole on the Lewis River, perfect for cooling off on hot summer days.

For a slightly more rural location, consider camping at Big Fir Campground and RV Park near the town of Ridgefield when you get an RV rental in La Center. It’s a bit smaller than some of the other parks in the area, but still has full hookups, showers, and a convenience store for if you need any last minute supplies. If you want to do some kayaking on the river, there’s a launch point just a short distance away at Daybreak Regional Park and Boat Launch.

Exploring the City

One of the most popular attractions and a must-see spot when you get a motorhome rental in La Center is Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The peak’s eruption in 1980 was the most destructive in U.S. history and the area surrounding it still bears those scars in the form of barren landscapes. Hiking to the summit of the volcano is possible, but most tourists limit themselves to the visitor’s center, which details the eruption and its ecological effects.

If you’re interested in Pacific Northwest Native American culture, the Lelooska Foundation and Cultural Center in the nearby town of Ariel is a fantastic place to see it. Inside the historic longhouse building, you’ll find traditional costumes, ceremonial masks, and dance presentations that give a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of the area’s indigenous people.

Whether you fancy yourself a wine aficionado or just love a nice glass of sauvignon blanc in the evening, you’ll want to check out some of the vineyards in the area around La Center. The Columbia River Valley is one of the most fertile parts of the country for growing wine grapes, and it’s made itself a strong contender to California’s Central Valley. Many of the vineyards offer tours of the fields where you can learn more about the wine-making process, but if you don’t have the time, they all have tastings where you can sample and find the perfect bottle to take home.
