Many small and large towns and cities across the United States are rich with some amazing history. La Porte, Texas is no different. It was here that the infamous Battle of San Jacinto took place, essentially giving Texas its independence from Mexico. A hurricane in 1900 struck Galveston and damaged many of the surrounding regions and their key attractions, including those at La Porte. Although it was founded in 1892, it became more famous during the 1920s and '30s because of the Sylvan Beach Amusement Park, which was nationally recognized. When you book an RV in Harris County, you won’t have to go far to find some amazing destinations.

Just north of your position will be the Sam Houston National Forest near Huntsville. A bit farther north than that is Davy Crockett National Forest, near Crockett. If you’re willing to take that camper rental from La Porte across the state, you can check out Big Bend National Park on the other side of Texas. If you prefer to stay a bit closer, head down to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and check out Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge near Freeport.

Discover La Porte

The Great Outdoors

This community has so much to see and enjoy that you could explore with the La Porte camper rental for a week or longer and still not get to see everything you’d want. One of those places to check out is Sylvan Beach Park. This is a nice little beach that is considered a hidden gem. There’s plenty of sand, and you can also fish, and the kids can play on the playground. It is a wonderful place to unwind and relax, either by yourself or with the family.

Juan Seguin Historic Park sits across the Houston Ship Channel, and there are plenty of places to sit down and enjoy a picnic. Grilling is not permitted, though, but if you have a motorhome rental from La Porte, you shouldn’t have any problem making something to eat there. This little park has plenty of historical placards that give you an excellent insight into this area, including the battlefields and what makes this region of the country so amazing.

The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is a place where the key deciding battle for Texas’s independence from Mexico took place. There is a monument, similar to the Washington Monument in DC, where you can go inside and get a much better view of the surrounding region.

RV Parks

You won’t have any trouble finding an RV park for an overnight or lengthy stay when you rent a motorhome in La Porte. There are dozens upon dozens of them in this small geographical area, so choose the one that is going to be ideal for your particular needs. One place you may want to check out is the Galveston Bay RV Resort. They have full hookup service and pull-through sites. Stay options include daily, weekly, and monthly. Additional amenities include Wi-Fi throughout the park, a fishing pier and marina, a swimming pool, and laundry facilities.

Bay RV Park provides full hookup services, too. Wi-Fi is available on-site, and there are restrooms and showers as well as laundry facilities. It is centrally located in the Houston/Galveston area.

Exploring the City

The San Jacinto Museum of History houses some amazing treasures from Mexican Texas, the Texas Revolution, and the Republic of Texas. There are also arts and artifacts, books and bayonets, swords and sketches, and much more to take in here. If you take the elevator to the top, you can check out the Lookout and see the Houston Ship Channel.

The Sylvan Beach Depot Museum & Library is a beautiful museum for the City of La Porte and the surrounding areas. There are workshops and exhibits, and though it may be considered a small museum, it is robust with local history. They even have a caboose from the Southern Pacific Railroad, which can be a fun stop, especially for kids.

When you travel in a camper rental in La Porte, head on over to the Battleship Texas State Historic Site. If you plan ahead, you could spend the night aboard this battleship. It was commissioned in 1914 and is the only surviving U.S. Navy ship to have served in both World War I and World War II. If you love military history, when you have a motorhome rental in La Porte, this is an absolute must visit, even if you don’t have any desire or time to spend overnight in the bunks where the sailors resided while serving on board.
