Ladonia is located in the rolling prairie of northeast Texas within a 90-minute drive of Dallas. It's a sparsely populated small town dotted with Victorian structures and historic brick buildings. Time appears to stand still in this little corner of Fannin County. Not far away, the North Sulphur River yields a bounty of fossilized marine animals.

Ladonia had many names, including McCownville, before Frank McCown renamed it in honor of La Donna Millsay, a singer passing through who entertained the locals. Since the town was platted in the mid-19th century, it was a shipping point for cotton, corn, and wheat using rails laid out by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. Today, Ladonia still holds on to its past by maintaining working ranches found throughout the town. For travelers in search of adventure, RV rentals in Fannin County take them on a journey through northeast Texas, and even across the state line to Oklahoma.

Finding Adventure in Fannin County

Rent a motorhome in Ladonia and explore the 35-mile Chaparral Rail Trail that weaves through four counties in northeast Texas. The multi-use trail follows repurposed railroad lines and passes right through Ladonia where several miles of it wind through forested areas and open fields on gravel and dirt surfaces. The Chaparral Trail is part of the Northeast Texas Trail, which covers multiple counties and spans over 100 miles of trail. The rough patches in between are no reason, however, to sample a segment of this trail on foot, horseback, or mountain bike.

Located on the shores of Jim Chapman Lake, the Cooper Lake State Park covers a little more than 3,000 acres of rolling hills covered in mesquite, bois d'arc, and eastern red cedar home to bobcat, gray fox, and nine-banded armadillo. Situated south of Cooper, the lake spans 19,300 acres of the dammed Sulphur River. Bluegill, largemouth bass, and crappie can be caught from fishing piers. Those who like to be on or in the water can swim, waterski, or launch a boat. There are several water/electric sites here for a travel trailer rental from Ladonia so you can stargaze through the night.

Covering a swath of the southern Great Plains, the Caddo National Grasslands offers more than just hiking, fishing, and horseback/mountain bike riding. On the Ladonia side of the park, black-and-yellow throated dickcissels can be spotted along with similarly-clad eastern meadowlarks. Coffee Mill Lake and Lake Davy Crockett on the Bois d'Arc Creek side attract a sizable crowd of songbirds in the summer. Keep your eyes peeled, and you’ll see otters and beavers inhabiting the lakesides.

Where to Park Your RV

The nearest RV park outside of town is quite a drive though still within a 20 or 30-mile radius. Don’t worry; there are a few gas stations in town so you can leave with a full tank. Then head to Box Ranch RV Park in Klondike as it’s the closest. Here, the camper rental from Ladonia, TX can hook up to water, electricity, and sewer. There is also fishing nearby. Stinson RV Park in Campbell has not only full-service sites but also full bathhouse and a three-acre stocked pond for catch-and-release fishing.

Farther out, a state park experience awaits at Bonham State Park. There are limited full hookup sites here so you may want to book a site far in advance if you plan to stay on weekends. Fishing, hiking, and mountain biking are popular activities in the park. You can also launch a boat or go for a swim.

The Walmart store in Commerce about 15 miles away is the closest place to park your motorhome rental near Ladonia should you need a space in a pinch. The next closest is in Bonham. Make sure you are welcome to stay at the Walmart parking lot by getting the store manager’s approval.

Experience the Land Before Time in Ladonia

Walk around downtown Ladonia, and you get a tangibly vintage vibe. Some of the oldest storefronts date back to the late 19th century, and the handful of Victorian houses that remain standing are worth photographing. The culinary offerings in town are slim, but if you love freshly cooked, homemade comfort food, you'll leave the dining table with a full stomach.

The Ladonia Fossil Park north of town is a magnet for fossil hunters and paleontology amateurs alike. The actual fossil bed is down by the North Sulphur River, which carves its way through steep, bush-clad banks. You may find shark teeth and arrowhead if you look through shallow water and sift around in the pebbles, or using a small shovel, dig in the flaky river bottom or riverbank for more exciting finds like ammonites. Eagle-eyed visitors may also spot a light-colored "fault line" - an actual crack in the earth running across the river. Be alert for any possible rise in water level due to rain from far away.

Grocery/convenience stores in Ladonia are few, so if you wish to expand your dining choices, you will have to take your camper rental from Ladonia to Bonham, the seat of Fannin County. Your effort will be rewarded with a range of American/homestyle, Italian, and Asian fares. There are also a handful of places serving fast food, Mexican dishes, and BBQ and steaks. Attractions here are equally varied. Learn about how Fannin County fared during the Texas Revolution at the Fannin County Museum of History, or look around the residence of former Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn.

Fannin County is right on the border of Texas and Oklahoma, and perhaps you can venture across the state line and explore the Texoma area. Book an RV rental in Ladonia and find out how far it will take you.
