Lewiston, New York is a small town that lies directly on the border between the U.S. and Canada, with the city of Buffalo to the south and the city of Niagara Falls to the southwest. Lewiston is historically significant to the area for many reasons. Lewiston played a significant role in the War of 1812, as it was a staging area for one of the war's first major battles, the Battle of Queenston Heights.

Lewiston was also crucial in the commercialization of Niagara Falls due to its strategic location at the edge of Lake Ontario and the Niagara River. Geologists speculate that around 12,000 years ago, Niagara Falls would have sat roughly where Lewiston is today before the powerful waterfall eroded and moved several miles. The history of the area, coupled with fantastic sightseeing, makes an RV rental in Lewiston a no-brainer.

Discover Lewiston

The Great Outdoors

With Niagara Falls and one of the Great Lakes right on your doorstep, there's plenty to explore when you book an RV in Lewiston. Seeing the falls themselves is a must for most visitors, and there's no shortage of ways to view it either, with several viewing platforms at different heights to give you the best vantage point possible. If you want to get up close and personal with the falls, you can always book a tour on the Maid of the Mist boat ride -- make sure to bring a raincoat.

Lake Ontario and the Niagara River area is also perfect if you're looking to do some fishing or water sports when you book a motorhome rental in Lewiston. Although it's the smallest lake of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario is still one of the largest lakes in the world, meaning there's still plenty to explore. There are quite a few companies and tour guides that offer fishing, with anglers coming from far and wide to fish for Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. While in the area, you can go for a jet boat tour down the Niagara River, which is an ideal activity if you want to see some sights and get your heart racing at the same time.

If you're looking for something rugged, you can take a hike up the Niagara Gorge. With breathtaking sights from atop the gorge, you'll feel small overlooking the immense power of the Niagara River and its rapids. There are a couple of different trails here -- the Whirlpool Rapids Trial is more difficult and involves some boulder hopping, so if you're looking for a relaxing walk, the Devil's Hole Trail may be preferable.

RV Parks

With Lewiston being so close to the border of Canada, there are options on both sides of the border when you rent an RV here. One option in the U.S. close to nearby Lockport is Niagara County Camping Resort. This campground offers roughly 100 grass sites with 30 and 50 amp electric and water hookups. Each campsite also includes a fire ring and a table for any picnic activities.

Across the border, campers have the option of going to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort. Jellystone is a reasonably large campground that offers over 140 gravel campsites with full hookups and 15 and 50 amp electricity. Half of these sites have pull-through access, and Jellystone also supports big rigs. Both of these campgrounds could be good places to stay when you rent an RV in Lewiston.

Exploring the City

When you rent an RV in Lewiston or around Niagara Falls, take the chance to learn about the history of the area on the historic Niagara Wine Trail. This trail will take you past some of the best wineries in the area, with lots of opportunity for tastings. While touring the wineries, you can also take in some history by visiting stops along the Underground Railroad. An essential part of American history, this would have been the last stop for any slaves looking to escape from the United States into Canada. There is also the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center if you're looking to find out more.

If you're looking for something to do within the Lewiston city limits, then you might want to visit Artpark. This public park was founded in 1997 and stages family-friendly outdoor music attractions, overlooking Niagara River Gorge. Artpark claims to be one-of-a-kind, with many well-known musicians and performers taking to the stage every year. Artpark aims to be a true exhibition on public art and offers lots of art-based youth camps to help build a new generation of artists. If you happen to be in town when a show is on, it may well be worth a visit.

With fine-dining options and high-class shops scattered around the town, you'll never run out of things to do when you book a campervan rental in Lewiston. There are plenty of interesting sights in Lewiston as well, with the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada across the Niagara River Gorge. You can hop across into the city of Niagara Falls and enjoy some Canadian hospitality while you're here. With gorgeous views from the bridge along the river, it's worth noting this is an active border, so make sure you bring your passport.
