The tiny town of Livermore, just a short drive to the northwest of Fort Collins on Colorado’s Highway 287, might not seem like the most obvious place to rent an RV. There are almost no attractions in the town itself, and it’s quite a way off the beaten path. But that’s exactly what makes it such an interesting vacation destination. When you book an RV in Livermore you won’t need to worry about traffic, long lines, or tourist traps; you can design your very own adventure in the northern reaches of Colorado.

While nominally in Colorado, Livermore has more in common with Cheyenne and southern Wyoming than it does with the Denver metropolitan area. Most of the population this far north in the state consists of farmers and ranchers rather than tech entrepreneurs and ski bums.

Discover Livermore

The Great Outdoors

Eagle’s Nest Open Space is one of the closest places to get outside near Livermore. With five miles of trail spread across 755 acres, this is an ideal place to do some wildlife spotting as mountain lions, black bears, and golden eagles all make their home here. For a bigger adventure, visit Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, just south of Livermore. This wilderness spans both sides of the Continental Divide and a variety of ecosystems, from high elevation tundra to lush river valleys.

Red Mountain Open Space to the north is another option that doesn’t require too much of a drive. There are over 20 miles of trail crisscrossing this protected area, many of which explore the fascinating red rocks that give the park its name. None of them are particularly difficult, so campers of all fitness levels should consider taking a hike there.

Rocky Mountain National Park is also a perennial favorite with visitors to Colorado. This massive national park has it all, from great hiking trails to 14,000-foot peaks to kayaking on pristine alpine lakes. If you love outdoor adventure, plan at least a few days at this park. Even if you never leave your car, you can still have an amazing experience just driving the Trail Ridge Road, the highest roadway in the national park system.

RV Parks near Livermore

While Livermore doesn’t attract hordes of tourists, it does have its very own RV park in the form of Gordon Creek RV Park. Sites have electrical and water hookups, hot showers, and there is a dump site on the premises. For the full-service campground experience, check out the Fort Collins / Lakeside KOA. Not only do they have full hookups, fire rings, laundry facilities, bike rentals, and a mini-golf course, but also prime access to a lake with boat rentals.

For campers that choose a motorhome rental in Livermore and don’t mind not having any hookups, there are quite a few great campsites in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Kelly Flats and Mountain Park forest service campgrounds are both relatively close to Livermore and have some excellent scenery to offset their lack of amenities.

If your RV rental in Livermore doesn’t have you staying anywhere for more than a couple of days it might be worth considering camping in the Walmart parking lot in Fort Collins. You won’t have much in the way of amenities, but with manager permission, it’s not a bad place to stay for short periods of time.

Exploring the Town of Livermore

Given its extremely small population size, there aren’t really any conventional attractions in Livermore. However, most visitors come for the splendid landscapes just outside of town, so this isn’t a problem. To get your city fix when you choose a camper rental in Livermore, your best bet is to take some day trips to Fort Collins.

Colorado, in general, is known for being a beer lover’s paradise, but this is especially true of the Fort Collins area. This is where the headquarters of one of America’s most popular microbrewers, New Belgium, is located. A tour of their facilities is a must if you have ever wanted to learn about the brewing process, especially since the brewery is so well-known for environmentalism. However, even beyond their factory, you’ll find a multitude of smaller breweries to enjoy – consider designing your very own brewery crawl when you book a travel trailer rental in Livermore.

Another great attraction here is the Totally 80’s Pizza and Museum, which showcases some of the very best memorabilia from that oh so lovable decade. Dine with a life-size Han Solo statue or peruse Pee Wee’s Playhouse; it’s a great way to expose the kids to some great pop culture and it will bring back the childhood of many adult visitors.
