Established in 1909, Manchester, Georgia was born out of the need of the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic (ABA) Railroad and Callaway Mills from LaGrange to locate their assembly and repair yards, shops, and other facilities in this part of Meriwether County. To this day, Manchester’s locomotive age remains alive in downtown as trains pass through on their way to Atlanta or Birmingham.

Lying on the foothills of the Pine Mountain range, Manchester is a progressive city about 90 minutes' drive from Atlanta. The city has managed to maintain a small-town atmosphere while clinging to its industrial roots courtesy of its Thirties-inspired Main Street. It also helps that the rolling hills of the Piedmont region are not far away. Search for an RV in Meriwether County today and discover the Southern charms and natural wonders that lie ahead.

Discover Manchester

Discover a Charming Slice of Piedmont

Franklin D. Roosevelt often escaped to his "Little White House" near Warm Springs on the side of the rolling Pine Mountains to ponder world affairs. His favorite spot is at Dowdell's Knobb, a lookout site along the Pine Mountain Trail offering sweeping views of the valley. Today the state park named after the 32nd U.S. President encompasses more than 9,000 acres of hardwood and longleaf pine forests. Creeks, warm springs, and small waterfalls attract wildlife and human visitors alike. Bring your travel trailer rental from Manchester to the park’s campgrounds and stay a while to take in the bounty and beauty the park has to offer.

Georgia's Piedmont region offers outdoor enthusiasts with fishing and birdwatching opportunities, along with watchable mammalian wildlife. A little bit of everything, including hiking and nature trails, comes together at the 35,000-acre Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge 90 minutes away by motorhome rental in Manchester. Designated fishing ponds yield bream, sunfish, and crappie; clear streams and beaver ponds attract migrating waterfowl, and mature, open canopy pine stands harbor endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers, a priority species in refuge management.

It’s all up to you to explore portions – or the entire length – of the scenic 155-mile Chattahoochee Flint Heritage Highway. The journey will take you through Coweta, Troup, and Harris counties, including Meriwether. Linger in quaint villages, admire the architecture along the way, and pause at historic landmarks. Get out of your camper rental from Manchester every now and then and follow in the footsteps of notable authors who have come here to find inspiration in the rolling landscapes.

Where to Park Your RV

Ramsey RV Park just outside of Warm Springs welcomes RV rentals from Manchester with full hookup sites, a pool, and a bathhouse. Motorhome campgrounds are scarce within 30 miles of Manchester, but you’ll find a few sites in Thomaston and Pine Mountain. Several gas stations are located in Manchester so make sure your tanks are full before heading out for a campground search.

A state park experience awaits at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park where you have access to restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Visit Roosevelt’s Little White House and take a dip at the Liberty Bell Swimming Pool nearby.

There are Walmart stores in Thomaston (nearest) and LaGrange. Consider staying here for a night or two if you don’t need to hook up to anything. Talk to the store manager, and you just might score a spot in their parking lot.

Enjoying the View from the Rail Fan Deck

Stroll through Manchester's bustling Main Street lined with brick storefronts and canvas awnings that call to mind the 1930s. Take note of the twin smoke stacks sticking out of the century-old Manchester Mill. To enjoy live performances, step inside the restored President Theatre, a public arts space built in 1935.

Main Street is the hub of Manchester’s modest dining scene. Options are limited, but a handful of convenience and grocery stores gives you the flexibility to prepare your favorites from scratch. If you want to venture out, you’ll find a handful of nice spots to grab BBQ, American comfort food, and Mexican quick bites. Classic Southern eats are on the menu at the Bulloch House Restaurant set in a home built in 1893.

Manchester is where the Atlanta (north) and Birmingham (west) lines split. To get a sense of how the city started, head to the Railfan Observation Deck at the back of the downtown's row of shops. Here you'll find a covered gazebo to view passing trains carrying all types of cargo.

If you’re really into locomotives, you might want to rent a motorhome in Manchester in late October for the Railroad Days. See model layout displays, buy railroad memorabilia, and browse the collection of artifacts of the Manchester Railroad Museum. Listen to the action down the lines from dispatch scanners, or hop onboard live steamers for a fun ride around a few blocks.

Manchester marks the start of your journey through Georgia’s beautiful Piedmont region. When you rent an RV in Meriwether County, GA, you’re in the driver’s seat to follow the quieter pace of life in the rolling foothills that lured a U.S. president.
