Marco Island is both a city and an island in southwestern Florida. This charming paradise is open and welcoming year-round. Marco Island itself is one of the largest barrier islands in the southwest portion of Florida, in the fabulous Gulf of Mexico.

Native Calusa people have been living on Marco Island for thousands of years, but when Spanish conquistadors first found the island in the 16th century, they named the island after Saint Mark. The Collier family came to the area in the mid-19th century to build a hotel, kickstarting a small village which would eventually incorporate on the island as the town of Marco Island. The island remained a peaceful fishing and clam-digging community until the 1950s when large tracts of land were then purchased and developed into vacation homes and residential neighborhoods.

Geographically, Marco Island can be found south of Naples, and a few hours’ drive west of Miami. Large forests and national parks can be seen quite close to Marco Island, and of course, the world-famous beaches lining the Gulf of Mexico remain the region’s most popular and well-visited attraction. When you book an RV in Marco Island, you can see all Florida has to offer and more.

Discover Marco Island

The Great Outdoors

You could honestly spend the entirety of your vacation on the beaches of Marco Island and have a perfectly good time, but there's way more to explore. Florida is home to thousands of conservation areas, preserves, state parks, lakeside campgrounds, and beaches, so it is worth it to take your Marco Island camper rental for a spin around the Sunshine State in search of them. Collier-Seminole State Park can be found just over the bridge on the mainland, and like much of South Florida, there are lots of mangrove swamps, estuaries, wetlands, and salt marshes teeming with all sorts of wildlife. The park is home to several historic structures, buildings, and pieces of dredging machinery, as well as picnicking areas, hiking trails, and campgrounds where travelers may stay when they rent an RV. There are boat ramps for fishing and boating enthusiasts, and ample space to paddle around in a canoe or kayak too.

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is another coastal park situated north of Naples on the mainland. There you can have access to the Cocohatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico. There are lots of wonderful animals to observe and photograph in the park, from bald eagles to endangered tortoises. The white sand beaches are stunning and full of possibilities, like swimming, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, beachcombing, sunbathing, and hiking along the water’s edge. There are boardwalks and picnic pavilions along the coast where you can sit and watch the sun set over the ocean.

When you rent an RV in Marco Island, you are well within driving distance of Florida’s two major national parks. Everglades National Park is one of the best known national parks and the largest east of the Mississippi River. One and a half million acres of South Florida lie within the borders of the national park, home to alligators, black bears, snakes, panthers, and migratory birds of all shapes and sizes. You can boat out into the swamps and estuaries of the massive park, or stay put and enjoy a relaxing vacation camping in your Marco Island camper rental at one of the many campgrounds on-site. Biscayne National Park is over by Miami, known for being over 95% water. Only a small sliver of the park is actually located on land, so visiting this magical place requires snorkeling, scuba diving, or boating.

RV Parks

Each resort is nicer than the last, with every amenity you can imagine. Pelican Lake Motorcoach Resort has lavish landscapes with hundreds of sites surrounding a large human-made lake. City Attractions

Marco Island is an amazing place to ride a bicycle, or perhaps stroll through on foot when it isn’t too hot outside. However, most of the island is made up of residential areas, with a few pockets featuring resorts by the sea, surf shops, restaurants, and bars. The Marco Island Farmers Market offers you a chance to shop for fresh produce, artisan crafts, and tasty meals made by order. This lively gathering usually happens once or twice per week, with live music to entertain shoppers.

Marco Island Center for the Arts is the artistic soul of the community, home to dozens of workshops for people of all ages. This wonderful center cultivates a passion for artistic pursuits in the public, stoking creative fires with inspiration from musical performances and art galleries featuring local artwork. There is even a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs for loved ones back home.

Marco Island Historical Museum is a fascinating institution that dives deep into the past to uncover mysteries. The museum not only covers the first settlers and development of town into the place it is today but also the Calusa natives that called the island home for nearly 2,000 years. The museum brings guests on a journey through time, from its days as a small village to the years it became a pineapple plantation, and much more. It is even home to several priceless artifacts, like the Key Marco Cat, an heirloom from the Calusa people that was discovered on the island. You can also head to Naples, but the beaches should be more than enough to hold your attention in between museum visits.
