The tiny mountain village of Markleeville, California is an incredible natural paradise surrounded by millions of acres of evergreen forest. The town is named for Jacob J. Marklee, a man who sought to capitalize on the gold and silver mining boom of the 19th century in California by building a toll bridge for prospectors to use. After Marklee was killed in a gunfight dispute, his 160 acres of land was used for the founding of a settlement that now serves as the county seat to Alpine County. Despite being the center of the county, Markleeville is small. Although not many people live in Markleeville full time, it has become a tourism destination with a steady number of visitors pouring into town each summer.

The warm Mediterranean climate makes Markleeville a fantastic place to rent an RV, especially if you want to immerse yourself in the enchanting forests of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When you book an RV in Markleeville, you can even see or participate in the Markleeville Death Ride, a grueling bicycle race that winds through five mountain passes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with over 100 miles of riding.

Discover Markleeville

Experience the Great Outdoors

Markleeville is primarily visited by people looking to explore the vast wilderness stretches that encompass the small town. Grover Hot Springs State Park is located on the periphery of town and is named for its healing hot springs that are popular among tourists. There are natural hot springs, hiking trails, a large spring-fed swimming pool, and numerous places to camp with your Markleeville camper rental. The hot springs are only open in the summertime but the pool is normally open throughout the year.

If you feel like going for a swim in crystal clear glacial waters, Emerald Bay State Park is not far away when you rent an RV and drive to the world-famous Lake Tahoe. Since 1969, Emerald Bay has been recognized as a National Natural Landmark and includes the water and lake floor as well as the lakeshore areas. The park is among the most photographed sections of the lake and it is home to Vikingsholm, a massive Scandinavian-style castle with 38 rooms overlooking the lake.

D.L. Bliss State Park is yet another peaceful sanctuary on the edges of Lake Tahoe, near the town of South Lake Tahoe. The park is named for a railroad and timber baron who donated land to the state of California for the establishment of a public space for outdoor recreation. When you visit the gorgeous little state park on Lake Tahoe in your Markleeville motorhome rental, you can even take a tour of the rustic looking Rubicon Point Lighthouse, the highest elevation lighthouse in the country. There are also lofty overlooks and strange hanging rocks that you can hike to when you arrive at D.L. Bliss State Park.

On the other side of Stanislaus National Forest, you can drive your Markleeville RV rental to Yosemite National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the country and quite possibly the world. This natural gem attracts five million people each year to see its captivating forests, elegant mountain peaks, and cascading waterfalls. Cathedral Peak, Half Dome, Sentinel Dome, and El Capitan are a few of the many gigantic mountain peaks and granite cliff sides that are world-renowned for their rock-climbing routes. You can camp out at the base of these giants or at one of the campsites scattered throughout the park.

Where to Park It

Finding a place to park and camp in your Markleeville RV rental should be a breeze due to the surrounding wilderness areas and the national forests nearby. Coleville/Walker KOA has a snack bar, a swimming pool, and a dog park for pet owners to use.

Carson River Resort is close to town, with camping sites along the river. You can fish for bass or trout in the water and cook it up for dinner over a blazing campfire when you choose to stay at this campground.

Topaz Lake RV Park is over on the Nevada-California border next to a stunning high mountain lake. This natural space is teeming with greenery and native animals, along with fish cleaning stations for fishing enthusiasts, laundry facilities, a general store, and docks for boats. You can also camp at one of the nearby state parks or at any one of the countless campgrounds in the national forests nearby.

City Attractions

The town of Markleeville is hardly more than a few structures, with a library, a general store, some governmental buildings, and a few other residential areas. Due to its small population, it is not somewhere known for its nightlife. The Markleeville Art Gallery displays a variety of local art. The Grover Hot Springs mentioned before are one of the biggest attractions in the area and are known for their healing properties and soothing nature. Visiting Markleeville without bathing in these natural springs would be a minor travesty.

Since Markleeville is the county seat, it is home to the Alpine County Museum. All sorts of historical artifacts and items are on display at this amazing little museum, and it even has an old log cabin-style jailhouse complete with iron bars and everything. Knowledgeable volunteers are happy to give guests the rundown on local history when tourists want to learn more, so definitely make sure you spend some time at this fabulous institution if you can.
