Marquez is a small town in Leon County halfway between the cities of Waco and Crockett, TX. The town was originally established in the late 1800s along the route of the International-Great Northern Railroad, which the town’s main street ran parallel with. Marquez took its name from the original landowner, Maria de la Marquez.
The town is in an area of rolling hills and farmland, interspersed with woodlands and lakes. Travel west when you book an RV in Marquez and discover the largest national forests and lakes in the state of Texas. It’s a beautiful area to explore, and with the wide open spaces and good highways, it’s easy when you rent an RV.
Just a few miles north and easily accessible in your RV rental from Marquez is Lake Limestone. The man-made 13,000-acre reservoir offers opportunities for fishing, boating, jet skiing and swimming all along the shoreline. The lake is well stocked with fish such as bass, crappie, and catfish, and as it is a little off the beaten path anglers will often find they are by themselves enjoying the peace and quiet.
Davy Crockett National Forest, under an hours drive to the east, in your luxury RV rental from Marquez was named after the legendary pioneer. The park covers a huge area of 160,000 acres, including woodlands, streams and recreation areas. Within the forest, you’ll find Ratcliffe Lake Recreation Area that has a 45-acre lake at its center. Here there’s a campground that accepts RVs, and it has picnic areas and hiking trails including a 20-mile loop.
Head south in your RV rental from Marquez in the direction of Houston, and you can’t miss the Sam Houston National Forest. The forest includes two large lakes, namely Livingston and Conroe, which are perfect for boating and sailing. Part of the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail passes through the forest along the western side of Lake Conroe with many parking and staging posts along the way. Both of the lakes are great for fishing, particularly for black bass and there are several boat ramps.
Book a travel trailer rental in Marquez, and the 3 Cedar Crossing Campground & RV Park is right on your doorstep, on the outskirts of the town. Facilities include a swimming pool, full hookup-sites with free WiFi and a quiet location amongst oak and cedar trees. All the RV sites have a patio with a firepit, and if you’re bringing your pet, they even have a pet spa/bath.
Right on the shoreline is Lake Limestone Campground and Marina RV Park. Along with the beautiful location, the park offers over 30 sites, most with full hook-up, an on-site restaurant, and convenience store. There is a boat ramp for lake access, fishing and hunting licences are available plus a designated swimming area. The campground is fairly basic but has everything you need when you rent a motorhome in Marquez.
Close to the town of Buffalo is the Kozy Lakes RV Park, situated among trees and small ponds, the site is beautiful and quiet. Despite this, it’s a short walk into the small town of Jewett for the local facilities. There are two large fishing ponds on site that also support wildlife such as deer, ducks, beavers and other wild birds. Every site has an electrical connection, and free WiFi, plus extra long pull thrus are available. The park could make a perfect, quiet overnight stay during your vacation in Leon County.
Being a small community the facilities are limited, but you will find an American style grill and a Tex-Mex restaurant in town, some grocery stores, and a filling station. Nearby Jewett is a little larger, and here you’ll find the Jewett Historical Museum. The museum has been established to promote the history of the town and Leon County in general and contains a range of interesting artifacts from the area.
Also in Jewett is the monthly Flea Market that has taken place on the second Saturday weekend since 1975. The market regularly attracts around 350 market stalls, offering almost anything you can think of. The usual fast food stalls will be present, plus local arts and crafts, antiques, and bric-a-brac.
Just south of Marquez is an interesting adventure, the Franklin Drive Thru Safari. The safari has hundreds of animals large and small, from giraffes and monkeys to raccoons and more. In the baby room, you can interact with young animals such as monkeys, otters, and lemurs, but this varies depending on the season. You can also hand feed some of the animals, and private tours of the safari can be arranged for a more personal experience. Pack up the RV and go exploring!
