Mars Hill is most well known for its namesake university. Even if you’re not a student there, Mars Hill has quite a bit to offer the traveler looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination.
Just 15 minutes from the tourist hotspot of Asheville, you’ll never be short on activities when you book an RV in Mars Hill. Asheville and the surrounding area stands in stark contrast to the rest of the state, with a decidedly hippie-vibe and the feel of a much larger metropolitan area. When you rent an RV here, expect great food, plenty of exciting attractions, and an eclectic mix of cultures.
With the Smoky Mountains as a backdrop, Western North Carolina is all about outdoor recreation and your Mars Hill travel trailer rental is your ticket to exploring all the amazing opportunities this region has to offer. For a tour through the treetops, make a trip to the adventure park in Asheville, which combines zip lining, rappelling, and hiking into an exciting all-day adventure. There’s also whitewater rafting a few miles away in Marshall. During the winter months, it’s well worth checking out the local ski resort for some ski or snowboard adventures.
Mars Hill is also just 90-minutes drive from one of America’s most popular national parks – Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If you only have only a day there, take a scenic drive through the park to Clingmans Dome, its highest point. If you have more time, plan a hike from there or explore one of the many waterfalls in the park. The easy 2.5-mile hike to Grotto Falls is one of the most popular.
Most of the RV parks near Mars Hill are located to the south, near the town of Weaverville. Of the sites there, French Broad River Campground is one of a few dedicated RV parks and has quite a few amenities including full hookups, tennis courts, and access to great hiking and horseback trails. They even rent inner tubes for floating on the French Broad River nearby.
Campfire Lodgings is another park in the area which, while primarily known for its cabin and yurt rentals, also has several large RV parking sites. If you’re looking for something a bit more rustic, nearby Camp Driftwood doesn’t have a long list of amenities but does offer showers
If you need to pick up any supplies or groceries, there’s a chain retail store just minutes away in Weaverville. To comfortably fill up your rig, you’ll probably want to plan a trip to one of the truck stops on I-40, a few miles west of Asheville. You should have an easier time maneuvering your Mars Hill camper rental through there, and most truck stops also have dump stations.
Most of the popular attractions in the area are located in nearby Asheville, but as this is a college town, there are still a few things to do and some excellent foods to sample during your Mars Hill RV rental vacation.
When looking for great food in Mars Hill, you can find a pub-style place that serves up classic dishes and for some south of the border flavor, there are burritos to be found around town too. You can even find some interesting filling combinations, like a burger burrito with all the toppings and french fries inside, along with a few great vegan and vegetarian options. If you love farm to table cuisine, you’ll easily be able to find some locally sourced fare. One of the restaurants also has cooking classes throughout the year where you can learn to create delectable dishes of your own.
If you’re a fan of craft beer, you won’t need to travel too far to find great ales. While Mars Hill has no breweries of its own, the nearby cities of Marshall and Weaverville have a few to choose from.
Love cozy wool sweaters and are interested in taking a deep dive into how they’re made? Plan a visit to the wool mill in the area, where you can take a tour to learn how raw sheep’s fleece is turned into beautiful clothing. They also have lectures and hands-on workshops throughout the year.
If you’re visiting during the summer months, be sure to look for the schedule at the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theater. They only do a few shows each season but the performances are excellent and well worth checking out during your Mars Hill motorhome rental vacation.
