Mendenhall was a part of the Pennsylvania land granted to William Penn in late 1600s. It later was bequeathed to his daughter, Letitia Penn, who sold it to landowners. Joseph and his son Elwood Mendenhall purchased 220 acres of that land and built a few businesses, including a freight station, a creamery, and a mail depot. A small town, originally known as Fairville Station, slowly formed around the train station. In 1860, when the Civil War broke out, Elwood’s brother Isaac made the first Underground Railroad “way station” (also known as a safe house) in Pennsylvania. Isaac and his wife, Dinah, hid a unknown number of slaves in their home.
When the town was incorporated in 1881, the citizens opted to rename it as Mendenhall in a nod to the Mendenhall brothers. President Richard M. Nixon is related to the Mendenhall brothers via his maternal line.
The closest large town is Kennett Square just under five miles west.
A common reason people book an RV is to explore the outdoors and embark on an adventure of a lifetime. Although this part of Pennsylvania is primarily farming, there are several wilderness parks in the area. The closest (and largest) Park is across the Pennsylvania-Delaware state border: Brandywine Creek State Park. Close to a thousand acres, this park was once owned by a massive dairy farm in the early 1800s. Remnants of old stone fences, buildings, and other structures can still be spotted, though the woods are fast retaking the once-open fields. This park, in particular, is known for the Tulip Tree Woods, a woodlands region in which 200-years-old tulip trees flourish. Fishermen can catch smallmouth bass, bluegill, and crappie in the Brandywine Creek and trout is plentiful in Wilson’s Run.
Several miles of trails serpentine through the park, in which abundant wildlife roam. Deer, rabbits, foxes, and several species of raptor birds.
A little farther south, White Clay Creek Preserve (PA) and White Clay Creek State Park (DE) combined make around 6,000 acres of wilderness. The region is a former Lenape tribe hunting grounds, and even today, visitors can see why. This park is filled with wildlife like deer, rabbits, porcupines, foxes, and more. Miles of multi-use trails pass through lush woodlands, airy meadows, and scenic vantage points. Horseback riding and biking are welcome, though limited to certain trails. Fishermen flock to the White Clay Creek, which has a rep for being one of the best trout fishing in both Pennsylvania and Delaware. Both parks have plenty of gorgeous scenery for nature photographers. Although this is a day-use park, bring your Mendenhall camper rental, there’s plenty of parking that can accommodate your ride.

A family-friendly campgrounds, it offers a number of fun feature for children, like a jump pad (a trampoline, essentially), canoe and bicycle rentals, mini golf, and more.
Alternatively, McCloskey Campgrounds in Elkton, MD, is in a scenic woodland spot, complete with a fishing pond, and easy access to local hiking and biking trails.
On occasion, it’s sometimes necessary to make an unplanned stop overnight. There is a Walmart in Kennett Square that may accommodate your RV rental. Be sure to ask the store manager for permission before settling in for the night.
