Mexico is the county seat of Audrain County, Missouri; it was founded in 1836 as New Mexico because it was a stopping point for settlers on the trail to the Republic of Texas. A local urban myth suggests that the earliest settlers found a sign with the word “Mexico” painted on it and left it in place because it was easier to name the town after the sign than to take the sign down. In 1837, it was appointed county seat under the name “Mexico,” then incorporated as a town in 1855 and chartered as a city in 1874. It was once nicknamed “Fire Brick Capital of the World" for being a major national supplier, but in time the industry collapsed; the town's two fire brick plants closed in 2002.

Mexico's downtown square is centered around the Audrain County Courthouse, one of several landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some multi-story brick buildings surrounding the courthouse were built when the city was established; the local government began modernizing the city in the 1970s, replacing crumbling sidewalks and installing park benches and quaint lampposts. Although no longer known as the "Saddle Horse Capital of the World,” Mexico is still the go-to place for celebrities to purchase a riding horse.

RV rentals in Audrain County are your perfect choice for experiencing this historic area. There are other cities you should also visit while you're here. Paris is home to the Union Covered Bridge, a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Perry is the southern access point to Mark Twain Lake. Sturgeon has a community of Amish families who have lived just north of the city since 1953 and operate numerous home-based businesses. Your Mexico travel trailer rental is your invitation to come and visit, and stay awhile.

The Great Outdoors

Whetstone Creek Conservation Area was purchased from a private citizen in 1976 with funds partially supplied by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Before being settled, the area had a tallgrass prairie, savanna, woodland, and forest landscape; it was privately owned through the 1800s and was used for cattle ranching through the early 1900s. In the 1960s, a portion of the area was used to raise bison. Today the area is a refuge for quail, rabbits, and other small game, and is managed to maintain the creek's water quality and protect the Black Nose Shiner, an endangered fish species. Visitors may enjoy camping, fishing, and hunting within the refuge. There is also a shooting range on-site.

Mark Twain State Park is located on the south end of Mark Twain Lake, offering visitors scenic bluffs that overlook the lake (and look just as impressive from on the lake), trails for hiking the forested areas, and opportunities to view the wildlife. Guests can camp in the park, fish on the lake, go swimming and picnicking, and other activities too. The park is also an ideal place for photography.

Big Muddy National Fish And Wildlife Refuge could be an excellent place to explore when you book a camper rental in Mexico, MO. This nature reserve in the Great Lakes-Big Rivers Region of Missouri was created in 1994 in response to the loss of crucial habitat that resulted from efforts to channelize and control the Missouri River (aka the “Big Muddy”). Today it is home to a variety of animal species, such as wild turkeys and beavers, just to name a few. Permitted activities include fishing and hunting, photography, and wildlife observation; visitors can take self-guided hikes or join in staff-led activities emphasizing environmental education.
