Moline is the largest city in Rock Island County and is located on a stretch of land between the Mississippi River and Rock River. It is one of the Quad Cities, along with East Moline, Rock Island, Davenport, IA, and Bettendorf. Moline gained its name from the French word Moulin that means mill in 1843. The town was originally planned as a factory town with the initial name of Rock Island Mills, but it was later changed to Moline.

The city is halfway between Chicago,IL, and Des Moines, giving easy access to both when you book an RV in Rock Island County. In 1848, when the town was still very small, a young engineer called John Deere moved his plow company to the city, and the company is still located here today.

The Great Outdoors

Eagle Point Park is just over the state line in neighboring Iowa but is only a short drive away when you rent an RV in Moline. Overlooking the Mississippi River, the 140-acre park contains a number of pavilions and viewing towers that give panoramic views of Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Trolley Line Trail follows the path of the original street-car service that used to bring visitors to the park in the early 1900s.

Also in Iowa is West Lake Park, comprising four lakes, two with boat ramps, that also allow fishing and swimming. For the more active, there is a disc golf course, and the QC Trails, which is a 9.5-mile easy grade hike around the lakes. Some of the lakes have man-made sandy beaches, and there are full-hookup camping facilities for an overnight stay. The park has two campgrounds that both take RV’s, so it could be a perfect overnight stop for your Moline luxury motorhome rental.

With five campgrounds, the Loud Thunder Forest Preserve may be a perfect overnight stop in your motorhome rental from Moline. Within the preserve, you’ll find a 167-acre man-made lake, up to 55 feet deep in places, that is stocked with a variety of fish. There are two hiking trails, one of which is a 12-mile circular loop of moderate difficulty and a two mile out and back. The trails are perfect for snowshoeing during the winter months. In addition, a range of sporting activities are available including archery, golf, and baseball.

RV Parks

Take your travel trailer rental from Moline to Rock Island KOA and the whole family will probably love it. With space for 75 foot RVs and trailers, full hookup sites plenty for everyone to do, it’s definitely a park worth considering. The park offers a swimming pool, hot tub, nature trail, and canoe hire to name just a few of the activities available. With so much going on the children are not likely to get bored!

For a simpler overnight stay, perhaps Lakeside RV Park will fit the bill. With less of a resort feel, it still provides all the basic amenities you’d expect, with pull-thru sites, full hook-up and bathroom facilities. If you’re traveling with your pets, they’ll be welcome here plus the humans can enjoy WiFi and cable TV.

Exploring the City

In the heart of the city, you’ll find Greenvalley Park, an oasis of peace and quiet away from the city. There is a boat launch area for entry on to Rock River, a fishing area, flower gardens and plenty of activity areas for the children. Take the six-mile long Kiwanis Trail along Rock River to explore the Greenvalley Nature Reserve.

With such a long history in the city, it’s no surprise that John Deere has opened an official visitor center here. The John Deere Pavilion opened as part of an urban renewal project in 1997, and along with exhibitions, a discovery area, and simulators, the largest John Deere retail store is also located here. Entry is free, and the interactive and hands-on style of the center is sure to keep the children happy!

As the river plays such a central role in the life of the city, a visit to the Mississippi River Visitor Center makes an interesting excursion. The center is located on Rock Island Arsenal on the Upper Mississippi River which has been kept navigable since the early 1800s by the Corps of Engineers. During the winter months, flocks of Bald Eagles can be seen here feeding from the river.

A little way south over the Rock River is Niabi Zoo. With over 600 animals from around 200 different species, there is plenty to see. Take a leisurely ride on the train to pass through the various habitats and the children will love the various petting and feeding areas, including giraffe, budgies and domestic pets zones.

If it's the atmosphere of the Quad Cities you are seeking, consider a camper rental in Moline. Visit the zoo, enjoy the local cuisine, watch a sunrise, and take in the beautiful scenery. Rent a travel trailer in Moline, IL and see what all the Land of Lincoln has to offer.
