The Great Outdoors

When you visit Monahans, Texas, make sure to check out the Million Barrel Museum. As the story goes, in the early 1900s, so much crude oil was pumped out of this site’s ground that not enough barrels were available to store it all. So the renowned Shell Oil Company came up with an idea, “building one big barrel.” That barrel later came to be known as the Million Barrel Museum. It is actually a giant hole dug into the earth and paved with cement. But the hole could not hold the oil’s weight, so it cracked, and the oil drained back into the ground. The empty barrel was left abandoned. Years later in 1987, the barrel was given to the Ward County Historical Commission, which decided to open it as the Million Barrel Museum.

If you have a desire to surf a sand dune go and try it at Monahans Sandhills State Park. Situated halfway between Odessa and Pecos, this thousands of acres gem boasts thousands of dunes, some going over seventy feet in height, making it look like the Sahara Desert.

Should you be interested in learning more about the Lone Star State, then there is no better place to do it than at West of the Pecos Museum in Pecos City. This facility with more than 50 rooms and satellite exhibits will award you a glimpse into what the Old West life looked like. The museum also boasts the grave of the gunfighter Clay Allison, a bar with bullet holes, and a courtyard area for weddings, reunions, and other social occasions.
