The original hunting and fishing grounds of local Native American tribes, European settlers arrived in this area in the late 18th century with the intent to farm the rich Maryland soil and make a new life. When a grist mill (flour mill) and a sawmill were built along one of the many streams that run through the countryside, a small town slowly grew around it.

Though many assume that the town, Monrovia, was named for the 5th president of United States, James Monroe, local lore says otherwise. As the story goes, two men from the Maryland settlement went to Monrovia, which is the capital of a western African country, Liberia, in hopes of striking it rich mining for gold. One of the duos died, and the other packed the body in a fish barrel filled with alcohol and shipped it back home. The town’s residents, impressed by the exotic name on the return address, opted to use it for their town name.

Today, Monrovia, MD, is a quiet town with around 500 people. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the state.

Discover Monrovia

The Great Outdoors

Central Maryland is a mix of farmlands with large swaths of pristine woods. A Monrovia camper rental will make it easy to explore all the county, state and, national parks in the area. Due to the abundant streams and lakes in the area, having a rental RV will make it easy to get a break from the mosquitoes as needed. Several state parks line the South Mountain, just west of Frederick, including Gathland, Washington Monument, Greenbrier, and South Mountain State Parks. All combined, they cover several thousand acres of land, and there are hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. The Appalachian Trail (AT), which follows the ridgeline, connects the parks like beads on a string. AT “thru-hikers” (people who are hiking the entire 2,000 miles, from Georgia to Maine, and “section hikers” (people who hike short portions) are regular sights. If you spot a thru-hiker, it’s considered good etiquette to offer water or snacks. They often go days in between resupply towns.

At the southernmost point, in Gathland State Park, the Weverton Cliffs is a moderately challenging hike, but the summit is well worth the effort. Summiters are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Potomac River and Virginia countryside. On a clear day, the town of Harpers Ferry, located in WV is visible to the west.

To the north, the Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park (which is where Camp David is located) are lovely parks that offer several miles of hiking trails. These parks were created as a part of the New Deal, and workers planted thousands of trees to replace the heavily harvested forests. Since the planting in the 1940s and 1950s, wildlife has returned to the forests, and it’s once again a verdant forest teeming with life. Deer, bears, turkeys, and other small game are regularly spotted here. The picturesque Cunningham Waterfall will thrill nature photographers in any season. Bring your Monrovia travel trailer rental and enjoy the day! Most campgrounds and parking lots can accommodate trailers and RVs.

RV Parks

When you book an RV rental in Monrovia, MD, be sure to figure out where you’ll park while you explore the countryside or overnight. The immediate area is mostly farmlands; however, there are a few options within five miles. The Ramblin’ Pines Campground in Berrett, MD, bills itself as a “full-service family friendly campground,” and has over 200 lots with hookups for RVs and trailers. As an added bonus, it also includes free cable tv, hot showers, a dog run, and a swimming pool.

Alternatively, the Little Bennett Campground, Clarksburg, may be a candidate. Adjacent to a fair-sized park, the campground has easy access to hiking trails and streams for fishing. Space for full-hookup spots is limited; book well in advance, particularly in the summer months. This campground is open in winters, as well, but the bathroom facilities are closed.

Exploring the City

Out in the pastoral farm countryside, it’s easy to think that there isn’t much to do in the area. On the contrary! By renting a luxury motorhome in Monrovia, it’s easy to go exploring. The Adventure Park USA, which claims to be Maryland’s largest entertainment center, is right in town. There are a wide array of attractions and activities that’ll thrill children and adults alike. Touch the sky at a pulse-pounding pace on the SkyCoaster, a bungee-jumping/slingshot ride.

Hit the greens! The gently rolling terrain and lush, bucolic landscape make for a fun, relaxing day at the fairway. The Rattlewood Golf Course in Mount Airy, which is open to the public, is a par-72 course that provides fairways with varying levels of challenges. The 9th hole, which is notorious for being tricky, has several bunkers and a dogleg.

Maryland’s rich, rich soil and mild climate translate into the perfect conditions for vineyards. There are several in the area. Linganore Winecellars, one of the oldest in the area, has produced several award-winning wines, both nationally and internationally. The entire facility is designed to be sustainable and green. One of the first agriculture businesses to be totally off grid, they get all of their power from wind turbines. The tasting room looks out on 300 acres of grapes laid out in neat rows.

At the end of a long day, sit outside your rental RV, and enjoy the setting sun. Fireflies will light up the rolling fields, blinking in languid patterns.
